We got a really nice battery operated digital thermometer a few years ago at Radio Shack. At the time, we were incubating some chicken eggs and wanted a way to accurately monitor the temperature and humidity in the incubator.

This thermometer measures the air temperature and humidity where it sits, and then it also has a sensor on the end of a long wire, so you can stick it out a window, and it gives you that temperature in a separate window. It also has a memory, and will tell you the highest and lowest temperatures it measured.

We've only had our snake a little over a week, but we bought this stupid little stick on thermometer and have been guessing on the temperature. Yesterday, I suggested that we take this good thermometer down and put the sensor under the substrate to see the the hottest temp was, and we were shocked that it was way too hot.

My husband thinks they would have similar items at Lowes or maybe Walmart.

I have one extremely similar to the digital thermometer you described, and I got it at Wal-Mart (probably cheaper than you would get at Radio Shack, I'm guessing)... it works wonderfully.
