Question on cloacal gaping....

charmer Jan 01, 2008 01:15 AM

I was just wondering... I've read about it in posts and sites, seen it before, etc. but curious still to know... those of you who experience a female that does wave her tail and smear urates upon introduction of a suitor, do you have a good rate of those gals becoming gravid? I can't think of how to pose the question correctly at all ;p I've heard debates on whether it's a sign that she's ready for his attentions or that she doesn't want to be mistaken as a male/opponent, but if it possibly is a sign of readiness... have people had good luck with those breedings?
Just looking for thoughts and opinions....
Thanks!

That's a good question, I'm interested in seeing the responses too. I thought I knew until this year. I've had two females go nuts with cloacal gaping this season. One I suspect should be more than ready for suitors, but I've tried a half a dozen different males and no one gets interested no matter how seductive she tries to be with the cloacal gaping (if that's what she is tryiing to do). The other female is even more odd, she's gravid. She's in an 8' cage baking at the hot end non-stop. I put a male in the cool end of the cage for just a few minutes as I was doing some rearranging. She came off the hot spot, gaped for all she was worth, then returned to the hotspot and reassumed her "heat conservation" colied position. The male remained unimpressed and never moved toward her. I've had other's that did the gaping thing that seemed to stimulate the males and have been breeding. Could they have a "do me" scent and a "don't even think about it" scent? It's interesting to watch the behaviors and try to figure it out!

I've had 2 females do the gaping and scenting very obviously, with both having drastically different results. The first one was an 8 1/2' female that proceeded to tail beat the male and attempt to keep him at bay (he was a very active breeder, so probably would have attempted courtship regardless of her willingness), the second was my fairly small Hypo female who did the gaping, the male started courtship and within an hour of introduction there was witnessed copulation. So no idea how accurate a sign of readiness it is.
