Best Caging for Boas

KevMadden Jan 01, 2008 05:45 PM

I'm going to be getting back into Boas and I'll be starting from scratch. I've been out of snakes for about 6 years and I see there has been some advancement in cages and heating. My question for y'all experts is what type of caging would you use if you were starting over and had some money to spend on good cages? I'm thinking about a rack system for little guys and sub adult. I'm not sure what type of other cages to use for the adults (Vision, Boaphile, Freedom breeder, or some of the other cages). Also, how would do y'all recommend the cages be heated? I'm leaning towards Vision cages, but the best way I can see to heat them would be with radiant heat panel where some of the other types of cages seem to allow for more heating options. A bit more info - the largest I could see my collection getting would be 15 adults.

I appreciate and look forward to y'all advise.

Thanks

Kevin

I really like my Boaphiles. If you think ahead, and think some of your animals may require more than the standard 4'X2'X11', there are expandable options. I like to give 8' snakes 8 linear feet to stretch out completely. It's not required, many people continue to use 4' cages for their bigger animals, it's just a personal preference of mine. And as conditions change, you can make the 8 footer 2 four footers easily enough. I typically use 8' cages for breeding, too. I like it that you can change the configurations as needed. I also like the belly heat, and you can decide how much area you want to heat.

I heard the doors break and it sucks to clean behind the sliding doors cuz of a crevice or something. Just what I read in other threads on this forum not my personal opinion. I'm sure the rhp (radiant heat panel) might be the way to go with those and/or heat the room.

I have used Boaphile, Proline, Neodesha, BARRs, and Animal Plastics cages.

I prefer both Animal Plastics and Proline cages.

I tried as many companies because I wanted to find out what was best.

With boas, you really need belly heat. Radiant heat can be used when you have trouble increasing ambient temps.

What happened to your original reply? That had some great information in it. At this point unless I could get a great deal on some used vision cages (That is what I had before and my only problem was heating them)I'm going to go with Animal Plastic.

Thanks Chris
