My Monitor Strange Behavior....

Paradon Jan 02, 2008 11:04 AM

So I notice my monitor hates fat old man, especially one with flannel shirt for some reason. He adores me and my mom and most women, but he is suspicious of old men that are fat. Everytime a fat old man comes close to him to gawk at him, he hisses and tail whip. One time my long time ago biology professor came over and wanted to take a closer look, I thought he would feel different about him since he is good with animals. I told him my monitor is tame and loves being scratched on the neck, so he reached his hand in the thing hissed and tail whipped at him, so I told him to back off incase my Ruggies decides to bite. Is there any underlining cause for him to hate fat old man, especially with flannel shirt? Does this mean he hates Frank? (KIDDING) It's weird because my iguana hates anyone in flannel shirt, too and would start to headbob like crazy at anyone, including me, wearing a flannel shirt, but he sleeps on a flannel cloth on his shelf, though, and he has no problem with that for some reason.

You know...being a long-hair rocker who grew up in the 80's I have averse reactions to people in flannel shirts myself. Particularly if they come from the pacific northwest and make disrespectful comments about the late Leo Fender. I have been known to hiss and whip guitar cables at such people myself ha ha. On a serious note reptiles in captivity tend to recognize their keepers and others who frequent the areas where they are kept. they will tend to react differently to strangers as they don't recognize them and perceive them as a threat. My monitors tend to act aggressively or hide when strangers come by My Iguanas and tortoises who will come after me when they are hungry or when I bring them food have disappeared when an unfamiliar friend is with me and I have a full plate of food for them. My wife has noticed that her big snakes act differently towards her(she feeds them) than they do to me (I do all the dirty work.)BTW is the fat old man in the flannel shirt Neil Young by any chance? Because I know that guy would Really get me hissin' and whippin' those guitar cables.ha ha

Lynyrd Skynyrd said it best;
I hope Neil Young will remember,
a southern man don't need him around, anyhow.

Sweet Home Alabama

Thanks for the grin & flashback!

I usually just projectile defecate at fat old men in flannel shirts that gawk at me, but I will bite and tail whip if I need to.

I think you have a lot to learn about monitors and iggies for that matter. Cheers

if fat old men in flannel shirts come towards me i usually poop in my pants and run away which causes a mess so i don't like them either.

this is by far the funniest post i have ever read...lol
i no dogs can recognize things like that (fat old men) and can become aggresive, in the instance of rescues that have ahd men beat them, and then become aggresive or afraid of men. on the other hand maybe he saw a fat man and knowing that fat men eat a lot thought the fat man would eat him..lol most likely just him being a stranger..lol

Im a fat guy I hope my monitors dont think im gonna eat them. hahahaha IAN

Far be it for me to be the serious one of the bunch but I'll give it a try. (snicker)

Sounds like your monitor has associated the average size of the people it sees most often as a non-threat (odds are that ya'll are all close in size). Throw in a big, strange, shape/size and it feels threatened. I'd be surprised if it didn't react the same way to someone that's simply taller than ya'll are, too.

I ain't got a clue about iguanas.

OK, I was serious for long enough. Here's what my savannah monitor does when fat men that look like Neil Young approach it.

I think you need to do alot of learning about monitors, their behavior, and what a monitor does. Reminds me of something I heard a 5 year old say about their families pet anole once in a petstore.
So, do you hug him and squeeze him, and call him Ruggies?

Paradon Jan 03, 2008 08:27 AM

I never hold him that much only when I need to clean his cage, but he doens't really mine me holding him either.
