How long does a typical rat live and how old do the females have to be to breed and when is it there time to retire??

Everyone will give you a different gist....but the basics are rats are 1.5 yr average- some will make it to 3yrs, some more but that is not the way to bet. Useful life of a breeder rat is a year. I start breeding my girls at 10-12 wks, depending on her size. I retire them when they let up production. Usually that is after 6 litters.

i breed mine the same age, however if they are on the thin side, then they will struggle when they nurse and the litter will suffer will slower growing rats which in return don't help new to be moms, so i make sure they have some girth to them before being bred.
