New Trans-Pecos Ratsnake Pattern Morph!

dustyrhoads Jan 02, 2008 05:24 PM

Here he is, fresh from the U.K! He's COMPLETELY Patternless! I'm afraid to love him to death or give him cooties from my other snakes, so I hardly ever touch him. Ha!

He's pretty neat to see in person. There isn't a spot or blemish on his entire blessed body. Besides the dorsal and lateral scales, his belly really gives it away that he's something unique...it's very clear - just short of transparent.

As far as I know, he is the only Patternless TPRS. He was born in '02, and his parents and siblings are all blonde-patterned.

As soon as the snow melts in the spring, I'll get some naturalistic shots of him. I hope to plug him into some virgin albinos, silvers, and pinkish normals in '08 and '09.

This is really exciting for ratsnake fans, because I truly believe this guy represents a third pattern morph to mix in with the amazing suboc color morphs that are out there (and growing in number).

Cheers!

Dusty

Wow
Best of luck with that one.. May open up a whole host of strains.
.
Just before putting my collection down for winter, I admired a normal blond and thought how attractive the ground color is.
Your new animal exemplifies it!
More attractive than Baja Rat????? Hard to say!!!!

Thanks, Bill. He really doesn't compare to a rosaliae. I know we sometimes think of a Baja Ratsnake as a "patternless suboc", but Bajas are different enough from TPRSs to tell them apart from even a Patternless one, like this guy. Bajas have that dark-edged appearance on their scales in nearly all cases, but this guy has scales that are edged in light golden-yellow to orange. Baja Ratsnakes' heads/skulls are also slightly different in shape.

Furthermore, though really yellow Bajas are supposed to exist west of Loreto, I've never seen one this yellow.

Thanks, Chris. Yeah, I think the Patternless Snow will be an INSANE morph. Can't wait to see those either.

Yeah, when you look at a really light Axanthic or Axanthic Blonde, they almost look blue. When you take out ALL of the pattern and are left with only color, that thing should look electric! Really stoked to see these Patternless bogeys in Orange, Silver, and Snow. The Orange ones, should SCREAM, in my opinion.

Very nice, Dusty, very nice. I guess this means you'd better start working on that addendum to your new book, right?

Pretty boring, IMO.
I like them for their pattern.

dustyrhoads Jan 03, 2008 11:10 AM

This may sound somewhat cliché, but I have yet to find any suboc boring. When judging against other species of snakes, it's tough to beat a "normal" H-snake, but my eyes boggle just as long over a beautiful Blonde or this Patternless, for instance. Just as appealing to me as their apparent beauty is their diversity in appearance of color or pattern. They're all quite unique. They have handsome and even somewhat personable faces, and all suboc faces/heads are patternless, regardless of body pattern. What's more, they have an awesome sixth "sense" of curiosity, and most are quite docile. In short, they're a joy to handle and admire. (And yes, I'm addicted.)

Can you give any info on origin? Private breeder or ?

Thanks,

Mike

dustyrhoads Jan 03, 2008 10:28 AM

Obviously River Road or close by, since its parents were blonde. The breeder's name is Richard Trant, he's mostly a boid guy, particularly chondros. He only produced one of these Patternless by pure serendipity, and this is him. He got out of subocs because of the difficulty in finding stock in the U.K., and I believe this snake's parents have passed on since.

Hey Dusty, I will get a picture of her after she sheds and post it. She probably is more reddish brown than blond but the similarity is obvious. That patternless suboc should produce some fine looking babies...!

In one word: Awesome. You definately should try to combine this trait with Silver, although just Axanthic Patternless may even look better IMHO.

dustyrhoads Jan 03, 2008 05:17 PM

Yes, silver is on the agenda, for sure!
