That time of year again...

ECC Jan 03, 2008 10:14 AM

I put my collection of colubrids into hibernation on 1/1 and I am getting the itch already for spring 2008 herping and prepping my snake room for all of the babies in the summer.

See below a nice wild caught male Edisto Island, South Carolina Eastern Kingsnake that I bought from Howie. He will be bred to my Orangeburg County, South Carolina female sometime this spring. Adjoining counties way down in the low country of South Carolina...

male Edisto Island (Charleston County, South Carolina) King

female Orangeburg County, South Carolina King

She laid a clutch of 11 eggs over the summer. All hatched and I gave away the babies to friends. See below some pic's from the hatch and some of the babies.

the clutch

hatching pics, september 3, 2007

The first baby out of the egg. i gave this one to my good friend derek lee.

another baby hatching from the clutch on september 5, 2007. see the egg tooth???

i cut these two eggs open on september 5, 2007.

...and here are some out of the egg on september 5, 2007.

Really looking forward to what 2008 will bring...

Hey there Peter, and Happy New Year to you. That was a heck of a nice clutch last year. And the Edisto Eastern is a beauty-should be a stud for you this spring. Whatcha gonna be breeding- eastern kingwise this year? I'll have va beach, currituck,nc and spartanburg s.c. Easterns if all goes well, not to mention some killer 3rd generation Outerbanks Kings. They get more speckled every year.

Derek lucked out...that was a really nice hatchling with the orange on the side.

Regarding your w/c Edisto Island king, do you know if most of the Eastern kings found on the island tend to look like normal Easterns vs. the Mosaic pattern look that we both picked up in Daytona in 2006? Just curious what the norm is for that locale.

Paul, I am not sure. I have 1.1 of that Edisto clutch I picked up on Edisto Island back in 2006. I am getting the rest of the clutch (2.5) next week from Brad.

I sold off the Mosaics I bought but I am sure I will get a breeder loan male (or two) from someone down the road to spread some new genes into this clutch.

I may go herping on Edisto this spring -- "Team ECC" has not decided where we are going this year yet; except to say that we are not doing the NC Sandhills again. Time for new places to explore.

You're in NC, right? Got any time in April? Maybe you would like to hit it hard with us?

Send me an email sometime Paul.

Peter, that Edisto Island eastern you picked up is a beauty. I saw it at Howies earlier this year, and it is a gorgeous king.
Speaking of SC easterns, that Greenville female I got from you is getting big. She is without a doubt, one of my favorites in my collection.

Steve,

Very good. You need to get a male for her.

Pete,
How long do you cool your snakes? I've had mine at 55 degrees since Nov. 26 (almost 6 weeks). I plan on bringing them out the last day of Jan.

Ralph, In the past I put everything down on Thanksgiving and brought them up on Valentines Day (about 2.5 months). I found that most started breeding in March and I got eggs in May.

That gives you babies when everyone else has babies and they are EVERYWHERE for sale. No thanks.

Last year and this year I put the stuff down in early January and I will bring them up in March or April. Babies, hopefully, will be along in late August and September (as they would in the wild).
