atlas511 Jan 03, 2008 10:37 AM

No.

Super pastels are already homozygous for the pastel mutation. You can't get any more than two copies of the same gene so super pastel is as super as it gets. But at least you get a guarantied an entire clutch of super pastels from that breeding because neither parent has the normal version of the pastel gene to give.

i know super is the most that can come of it...but will the quality change as you breed supers to supers? like a light nice normal to a realy nice pastel? I have had ugly pastels from dark normals to dark pastel and very light exceptional pastels from light normals to light/ bright pastels. I was wondering if super to super will give you even better supers?

I see what you're saying, and no, not really. The quality of the supers will affect the offspring, not that they are supers.

So, if you breed two awesome looking supers together, all the offspring will be (theoretically) awesome looking supers. You breed two okay looking supers together, and you'll probably get lots of okay looking supers. You breed ugly supers together, you'll get ugly supers. This is where it's not just inheriting the genes, it's inheriting how things are displaying (light and dark animals, good displays of the genes, etc), so you want to breed the best to the best to get the best.

So if you want awesome looking supers, just breed awesome looking pastels together, and use the supers to make combos! :D

Think of the genetics like money; if one super pastel is worth one dollar and the other super pastel is worth one dollar, when you pair them up, the most you'll get are two dollar babies, no matter how many times you ask.

Mykee,

In your example, wouldn't the babies just be worth $1? Or maybe the way prices have been dropping they would be worth 25 cents!

Just kiddin' man.

I think the route i was going was the percentage of visible blushing... will the blushing become more white or washed out?

j3nnay Jan 05, 2008 09:43 AM

We were also referring to that in the "quality" of the pastels/super pastels. How you define quality is up to you - so if in your case a pastel with tons of blushing and white is high quality, then breeding two together with those traits will produce babies that hopefully have as much blushing and white as the parents, if not more.

Someone with more boa knowledge correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that how salmon boas were bred? Just by breeding the most "salmony" boas together until eventually they were the morph we see today?

It may be that breeding two supers together does create better looking supers, but that may also be just because the two supers are good examples of the trait...who really holds back a pair of ugly supers and breeds them together?

I understand what you are asking, but dont have much of an answer, just some info...
I have always heard the theory that the best looking Pastels were produced from a Super Pastel... This is the first year that I had a Super Pastel male for breeding and I did find that he produced very nice Pastels, much nicer than the Pastels produced by my Pewter male. Who knows if the Pastel in my Pewter is of lesser quality or if the theory is really true... Maybe a little bit of both.
--Pastel produced from Super Pastel--

I also had the oppurtunity to breed Super Pastel X Super Pastel last season... I have not heard that this has been done before though I am sure one of the biggies has done KillerBee X Super Pastel or some similar combo.
I found that all of my Supers were very nice... Some were nicer than others and I am very stoked on the two females I heldback. Out of 8 eggs I also ended up with one of the coolest looking striped Super Pastel males... Thats all the info I have!

Nice group pic, even the Pastel looks really nice! I like the pics of Supers when it shows how light their heads are, looks like someone took sandpaper to it.
