Is this anything special?

morphmagician Jan 03, 2008 02:12 PM

I am new to the BP world and saw this snake today. She is SOOOO much lighter than any ball I have ever seen. Sitting next to the others she looked like she was a cream color almost. Is this a vanilla?

I does look lighter, but normals can go from extreamly light to dark dark. I personally would not count on it being anything differnent.
Here are some normal comparisons. These animals are both normal.

NORMAL

If it's reasonably priced and seems healthy (quarantine anyway) and especially if it's a female I'd jump all over that. I like the way she tends to have one alien eye and the halo around it. I also like the dark thick background. Is the belly white and/or tending to have flames near the lower sides?

I picked up two different pet store females with some of those characteristics over the years and one has already proven genetic. The younger one seems stuck at 1,300 grams (but ate a retired breeder rat last night so might yet make it late this year). Try not to get your hopes up too high but if the price is right and you wouldn’t mind an extra normal female anyway I’d go for her.

She has great flaming and she has tons of colors in each one of her martian heads. Its like green just beaneath the dot turning to a yellow as it goes under her belly. Her head is VERY faded and she is SOOO light. For $150 I may have to get her and roll the dice. She's probably 800g or so. The store owner said she's out of Florida so she may be an import but he swears she is CBB. She ate in front of me today so I know she's good there. I was thinking of mating my granite with her or one of my pastels. Could be interesting. Unknown projects are so much more fun than known projects.

Yes, I went back and looked at your picture again, nice flames. The color could be stress or seasonal but coupled with the pattern I'd be optimistic. Hate to recommend a gamble but if you have the $150 to spare she may be worth it. If you get her check with me when she is ready to breed next winter and I might have a matching male by then (the breeding loan that proved mine only got females this year but if they where males they would be big enough by now). At least I hope to know if they are compatible with the white snake complex next summer so might have some more info to help you decide what to breed her too (right now I’d suggest Mojave).

Tho she looks nice - be advised that there are many reasons why a perfectly normal ball can appear lighter especially this time of year - including hormones, stress, malnutrition, temperature, gravidness, etc. - if you don't know the animals history don't count on it staying that color for long - and don't expect it to be genetic.

If It were me and she is the size and price your saying I would snap her up and take a chance with her. I would breed her to a YB or maybe a lesser or Mojave.
