Honduran Boas

metalpest Jan 03, 2008 04:41 PM

Some new pics of my Hondurans. Trying to breed the Steve Beamer male and Dyer female right now. Last year, they copulated for about 2 months, but she never became gravid. Hopefully things will be better this year. Any advice would be appreciated!

Very nice snakes but do you think they are big enough for a successful breading? This is just my opinion but I would wait a year or at least fatten her up a little. How old are they, how much do they weigh, and how long are they? I know they are a smaller verity, but if it were me I would give them another season.Good luck! Again, you have a beautiful pare.

The larger female is 04 and nearly 5 ft. She didn't grow much this year despite constant feeding (except for when I stopped feeding her in case she was gravid, which she wasn't).

Nick, they are Hondurans, and will remain thin in stature through out their lives. Please do not "fatten" them up for breeding (even if you could). She is either a healthy weight and mature enough for breeding, or she ain't. Extra weight will not help you any at all.

This misguided info stems from people who are in too big a hurry to get their snakes to breeding size, because they are more interested in dollar signs, than the health of their Boa.

Take it or leave it.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if she did not breed due to insufficient fat stores last year. I am thinking the same thing for my pythons (who bred the year before). My Honduran may be bigger, but not by much! Here is a shot from last breeding season.

Should have stated that my above post is just my opinion on the subject as is this one.

Feeding too often reduces longevity for one. I'd rather have a 20 year old Boa that can breed many times, than one that is used up and dying by the time it's 10 yrs old. And trust me, I've lost many Boa at 10 years or younger due to feeding too often when I was learning abut them.

Bob Harding still has WC long term Captive Hondurans from WAY back when. They are still breeding too. Just let them do their thing when they are ready. That's my advice.

Good luck.
