....And now.................

Patton Jan 03, 2008 08:41 PM

for something completely different!
I know this is a bit graffic, but very interesting.
I have an Orangeburg, Co. Eastern King that has had a slow start.
I can only get her to eat snakes. I was cleaning her tub and was very surprised to see her defecating her last meal. I guess there isn't much that they can digest from a small snake meal.
I definitely did a double take when I saw this.

Wow!,.......that's too bad Phil. As you well know, I also have a fondness for elapsoides and the rest of the milks.

I would probably do the same thing though, as it went to a useful cause.

I spoke with a guy who keeps and breeds Death Adders. He feeds small lizards to his baby Death Adders and he was having the same problem.

He killed the small lizards and then poked needles into the body cavity of the lizards before feeding them. This results in the digestive fluids of the snake penetrating more into the lizard and more digestion of of the lizard.

He then used this tactic with baby Coastal Plains Milk snakes and the result was that the snakes digested more of their meals and grew faster.

When problem feeders get too skinny they lose their digestive juices and they are all done. While the feeding response to snakes and other stuff may be normal or better, I would give that snake about 2 weeks to live. I would suggest pinky pumping them, but the stress this causes isnt favorable either. If it were mine I would keep it WELL hydrated(maybe even leaving it in water)and cool it to brumation temps in hopes that the drinking(and not vomitting)will build up the enzymes necessary for digestion. I hope I am wrong, keep us informed,Jeff
