Breeding BHP

adogunnaike Jan 03, 2008 10:02 PM

I've read almost everywhere that BHP are really difficult to breed. Im wonding if that information was out just a little bit outdated. i know that sometimes 2 males are need, but someone stated that cooling had a lot to do with it before (i guess people werent lowering temps cool enough).

thanks... any help will gladly be appreciated

I wouldn't say they are difficult, but they are tricky.
The hard part is hatching.LOL.
Getting the females to ovulate is a little tricky as well and may require a little while for you to find your groove with them.
Many different keepers do different things but, all breeders have said... they aren't a snake that is going to go every year consistently. Some females will go every couple of years, some female will go 2 years or so in a row. Some females won't breed at all.
And it's the same with the males. Some want too....some don't.
Adding a male will sometimes spur another male into breeding, sometimes it will scare the crap out of a male and send him in hiding for 6 months. And also, some females like to see a tussle between males to get them going.
All and all, BHP's aren't a snake that will give you definite results every year, but they are GREAT snakes and definitely my favorite snakes.
Cheers.

Hey D

I love BHP too. I really like the hypos and axanthics, but theyre really expensive. If i do purchase a het pair of something I,d like to get some of my money back. Im not sure what Im going to do, I was thinking about buying a trio (1.2) but another male i would be essential.
