Howie,

What is the story on that snake? It is very dark. Is it wild-caught or captive bred?

Hey guys, i was just goofing around and took a pic off the net of a todos santos island zonata(herrerae) and renamed it a twilight zonata-quite weird that a coral banded king has no coral bands(just a bit of pinkish suffusion anteriorly). almost worthy of a rod serling tale. i think you are right Peter, that no one has any available commercially-at least legally. be fun to work with though, wouldnt it?

It was not Peter who suggested that, it was me. Peter was asking where to get one. LOL!

Well normally I would care. But for so many reasons I would hate for anyone to confuse me with Peter Jolles.

Howie~ watch out for the crossfire. LOL!

No, I am not interested in that snake. I think it is interesting to look at because I have seen, on some field herp sites, zonata and pyro's that have much more black than the selectively bred snakes we see for sale.

It would have been an unsual snake - much like some (almost) all black and yellow Scarlet King I saw a while ago.

Thanks Howie.

i didn't think any were around anywhere because they would have been taken illegally. There may be some in secret collections but i have never heard of any being avaliable for sale.

I know of a few that were collected in the late 70's
for zoos in the U.S. and Germany. I've also heard that some of the zoo stock made it into private hands. Now whether those bloodlines are still in existence is the big question?

One breeding pair of "herrerae" being allowed for import into the states along with CITES papers and the whole deal. I believe I saw the article in a "REPTILES" magazine many years ago.

Not that it matters much to me but I do know of some that were taken illegally. It depends where yours trace back to.

The 9 snakes that were taken in the 70's might have perished. Today Todos Santos z. are not as easlity found. Populations had appeared to be at normal levels for many years and then mysteriosly disintigrated. Due to their limited distribution and poulation densities Deleterious Inbreeding depression may have occured and probably explians ther scarcness from those original 'legal' specimens legally taken in the 70's.

I do know that they do exist in private hands in Germany, just like the San Franscisco Garter Snake. It's sad that more San Francisco Garters exist in Germany than all of San Mateo Co., Ca.

I guess what I was trying to put across in my last post( but it got away from me)was that if inbreeding depression is more likely with island pops then wouldn't it be twice as bad for captives animals? I mean they are already inbred in the wild. Since these german herrerai came from the 1970s wouldn't they have "some problems"(?). I might be wrong on this but it seems logical. I guess we will have to talk to the few breeders who have been producing them year after year. I mean we really know nothing about how the captives bred or even if they survived.

I would like to see one person who has bred these successfully over the last 30 years and what the results are. AND I mean the legally collected ones.
