Old age or sick?

Jdennis511 Jan 04, 2008 01:22 PM

My female beardie is 10 years old. a few months ago she stopped eating. Thought she was broomating, but I've noticed she lost alot of weight over the past few weeks. I started spraying her with water so she wouldn't dehydrate. She would eat bugs but not veggies. Most recently noticed that she has no energy not even when tempted with her favorite food (super worms). I gave her a bath yesterday and she was listless, as if no energy to move. She gave me beard (which never does when being handled) and was not happy with me handling her for bath. I think she is dying. I've never seen her so skinny or tired. My birds have a probiotic that I started to give to my beardie yesterday. Will this help? I'm not looking to go to the vet but maybe I should. At 10 years of age is this a natural sign? Can a Beardie of this age with these symptoms bounce back?

There are beardies out there that get into their teens so there owners claim, I have even heard 15. I certainly would never fall back on old age until everything else has been ruled out. She may be acting aggressive to you because she is uncomfortable. I would take her and a fecal to the vet right away.

We'll she's still with us. After force feedings, several baths, periodic misting and probiatic she finally pooped (Jan. 9). We immediately went to the Vet with our fecal sample. Since she has not been eating for a while she is severly dehydrated. Weighing in at 290 gr. ( /- 15 inches head to tail) which I know is light for her the Vet gave IP fluids, panacur/strongid/flagyl 1:5:1 suspension (treat worms and parasites, just in case), a comprehensive profile (blood test) and a facal float. Vet called this evening (Jan. 10) and said that her profile numbers were low in some areas which means a threat of renal failure is possible. She is well hydrated from the IP but still seems out of it. The Vet wants us to feed her ZooMed pellets crushed and mixed with gatorade tomorrow. Then on Saturday he wants us to come in for a Vitamin B-12 and Iron injection. Hopefully we can get her eating and hydrated. The Vet also mentioned that at 10 years of age she is nearing the end of her life cycle. He mentioned that in the 40 years as a Vet he hasn't seen many Beardies 10 years or older. Although everyone has heard of Beardies living 14-15 years it's not common in captivity.

stay tuned.....we hope she responds well to this so we can enjoy her a few more years.

Her length is actually 18.5 inches. Last night I didn't want to wake her up and stretch her out. She has been up and down today and ate 2 teaspoons of ZooMed pellet mixture. She shows signs of perking up but still very lazy and withdrawn. Hopefully tomorrw at the Vet we will learn more. She is definately not well.
