Whats so great about Geckos?

bengalensis Aug 25, 2003 10:01 PM

Just wondering what the attraction is. I only keep monitors, and a couple snakes, but I cant help but notice the popularity of Geckos. Geeze, just look at the amount of posts at this site!! I dont understand. Please fill me in.

Dont get me wrong, Im not trying to say that theyre not cool critters. So please dont get the wrong idea. Im just curious.

With utmost respect,
Michelle

p.s. Monitors RULE!!!

Haha(just kidding!!)

Leopard geckos are cute. They have personalities, they can be curious and inquisitive and docile and tame. They are velvety, not scaly. When they stalk their food, they look like cats. They will do silly things like try to walk upside down on a screen top holding on with their claws. Sometimes, they will stare you down until you come over and pick them up, like one of mine is doing right now (just went and got her) She likes to be stroked on the top of her head. And hang out on my shirt while I type, where she is right now. just hanging out. If the TV is on, she'll watch that. They come in an amazing variety, with many beautiful morphs that are increasing in diversity and beauty by the minute it seems. They are fantastic reptile pets and the some of the most beautiful and colorful of all reptiles. There are still lots of challenges and places to go with breeeding programs of all kinds of morphs and morph combinations, which makes breeding exciting.

mostly cos' they are super easy to take care of, and are recommended to a lot of beginners. and also, your not joking, monitors do rule, especially water and ionides.

i understand, when i first got into reptiles, i thought why are they so great? I have kept two uromastyx lizards and love them, but the geckos are really neat, they are easy keepers, good breeders, and sweet rewarding little guys. It is fun to watch them hunt, which i can't really do with uros however it is fun to watch them make a mess eating their greens. geckos are cool though they are active and don't require huge amounts of space which monitors do, and some species of snakes, dont get me wrong i love snakes and monitors i just dont have any more room due to my collection of uros/leos.
They are just neat little guys, and seeing what you get in breeding is fun too.
Enjoy your collection!

I think the atraction strongly comes from these traits.... personality (very fun, interactive and goofy critters), size (they dont get very big and can be happy in a relativly small tank size), color and patterns (they come in all kinds of colors, patterns, shapes, sizes, ect), easy to maintain (easy to food, intertaining, easy to care for with the "begineer" species)

Because they're cute, colorful, nonthreatening, and can be kept in a 10 gallon. CB ones are readily available for cheap. They don't bite, if they do it doesn't hurt, AND they're easy to breed. Much less of a monetary, space, and time commitment than a monitor.

(P.S. I don't have any leopards. I do have cat geckos, which are in the same family. So that's why I lurk in this forum, if you were wondering.)
