humidity problems

Dydy4jamaica Jan 05, 2008 03:41 PM

i have three baby basilisks in a 20 long glass terrarium (yeah its too small im building a bigger one as i speak) but i have 1in thick cypress mulch layer, sphagnum moss one the water end, fogger, and a large 4x10 ziploc container as a water bowl filled to the brim. a fan that should be pulling the air from a humidifier a foot away...but i cant get the humidity up to 75 or 80. with the fogger off the humidity quickly goes back down to 45 in an hour or so same humidity as the room. (winter makes the humidity suck here). ne other ideas will be welcome, i am concerned about the same humidity problems occuring in the new cage im building. they have no shedding problems but the humidity bugs me.

What are you covering the tank with? In an aquarium, the humidity has only one way to escape...through the top. The key is to cover just enough to keep the humidity up but not too much that it cuts out too much ventilation and promotes mold.

I would lose the fogger. They have been known to short out and catch fire. Nasty peice of equipment in my opinion.

How far off is the larger enclosure from being done? It may be better to focus on getting that done and dealing with the humidity in the new enclosure. What construction is the new enclosure? Wood? Also if the 20G long is all glass then yes cover the top just enough to keep the humidity up. If its a turtle tank "I doubt it" then use some plastic and aquarium silicon to cover the filter hold on the side. Good luck keep up up to date.

im half way done and its framed with wood but from the inside out its all plexi, the wood is on the outside jus to keep the shape of the enclosure and to act as foundation and support. the reason i ask is that if i can figure it out with the smaller one then the bigger one wont be a problem. the fogger i only keep on for an hour or so at 7 hours apart. i have tried covering it and having the fan circulate the air but although the humidity kept up, mold started growing on the so called hide that doesnt harbor mold. but thanks tho im gonna try a few more things i found online and from local reptile breeders and see if those methods work. my idea for the new one tho is the entire bottom of the tank flooded and land mass going around the sides and back, with big strong plants and lots of branches so that they have lot of places to climb and sit with a water fall to keep up humidity. basically im goin for the pond in the middle of the enclosure.
