Need Large Hide

DrumRnj Jan 06, 2008 12:07 AM

I have a 5 1/2 foot red tail columbian boa and am having a hard time finding a hide that will fit him. Does anyone have any ideas. I picked up a wooden box, that is normally used for ferretts, but am looking for an actual hide if I can get one. I have heard that some people use boxes and things around the house, but I would rather not do that if I can help it. Let me know if you know where I can find one. Thanks, George

They're cheap, easy to clean, and work great.
To avoid sharp edges, get a wood burning tool from your local hardware store and it will just burn right through it. You can burn a hole that will be perfect for your boa. The wood burner is just a little hand held instrument for burning designs, etc.. into wood.
Be CAREFUL, they get HOT!

Except, I shelled out a few bucks and tried a doggy litter pan! LOL! It had a lip where it was a bit lower and stuck out a few inches, supposedly to keep from spills and make it easy for the animal to step into. It worked well for my 8ft boa... of course, back then I had an enormous glass enclosure for her that we had constructed.
Kitty litter boxes also do work really good. I've used the tops for them too... since they have doorways already built in. Some snakes may not appreciate the larger hole of course... but I consider it meeting my snakes halfway!
However, I think you may be looking for something simulating a natural setting... there are other comments to your post that may be more helpful. I just had to comment on the cat/dog litter pan method... it does work!
Good luck!

make one with plywood and gorilla glue. make it look like a rock with cement and stains. just if you do it remember being imperfect with the cement is the way to go.

Get a burm sized waterbowl (the largest size that LLL Reptile sells is the bowl I have in mind), and chip a hole out of the side. If the edges are sharp, sand them down a bit.
The bowls are just brittle enough for it to not be too hard to chip an appropriately sized hole out of one side.

A 4.5 foot tegu can fit itself into a hide made that way... I'm sure your boa will be able to too!

I used a rubbermaid dishtub turned upside down with a hole cut in one side. You can get them in colors so they can block the light and they are cheap, easy to clean and virtually indestructable.

I used a rubbermaid type tub upside down and used tin snips to make an entrance. I softened the edge with a bic lighter.

Although most of the time though I used the cardboard box off of a 12 or 18 pack of beer! : ) The good part is it's disposable. My roommates drink the beer and make more empty boxes.

You should be able to find one at your local Lowes/Home Depot. They work great for larger boids!
