Ideal Crested Habitat Construction

GeckoGeoff Jan 06, 2008 06:49 PM

Hi all,
I'm currently researching a species of gecko I would like to keep and potentially breed. I have found Cresteds to be the type that matches best with me. I realize these are an arboreal species, so a higher cage/habitat would be better than a longer one. I also read that aeration is key, and also that a cricketless diet is acceptable. Based on all of these factors, I am planning a habitat built out of pegboard and acrylic. 3 walls of pegboard and a hinged 1/8" acrylic front. Can someone please tell me if this will work? Also, I would like two specs for a 1.2 trio. Bare minimum spec, and an ideal spec for habitat size.

Thanks for your help,
Geoff

I would question the peg board, I'm not sure what it is necessarily made out of and soft wood and glues can be dangerous to lizards of all kinds. What I would worry about first though, is how will the peg board stand up to daily misting? (The pegboard in my old kitchen sure didn't stand up to humidity well.)

These are my first thoughts, but then I have said many times here I live in Mold World, all the mold of living on the river, but not the view to offset the frustration.

Why not look into commercially available enclosures? We have a 10 gallon aquarium base with another 10 gallon sized plastic coated cage on top of that. This is for one female only. There are also great all mesh cages and more expensive exoterras. I'm not against self built, they can be amazing, but good enclosures have gotten very affordable these days and, when you do something like ours, can continue to grow with your geckos.

Hope this helps a little.

I think it is a safe bet to avoid the peg board, moisture would warp it and over time it would probably start to stink as well. I keep my 1.2 geckos in a 45 gal tall glass aquarium and they are doing great.
