I want to move my sons beardie off the newspaper to sand.He is now over 6 inches long and eats in a separate container so there shouldnt be any risk of impaction should there?
Thnx,rayman

I recommend waiting till he is at least 10" long, 14" would be better. Feeding in another container will ensure he doesn't eat sand accidentally but since dragons tend to taste their environment with their tongues, there is still a chance he will get enough sand that way.

personally i do not reccommend the sand as a substrate...discussing substrates is always controversial between beardie owners but i prefer non-particle substrates such as paper towels, newspaper, repticarpet and tiles that way there is NO chance of impaction at all and also if u use the tile it helps keep the nails from getting too sharp but its your decision on which route you wanna go with substrate

I wait until my BD's are 12" before changing them to sand. I use childrens play sand from Toys R Us. I wouldn't use any sand you buy in a pet store.

Okay I'll wait till its bigger. My son really loves this beardie and its a very friendly guy.He was from the beginning. He will eat from his hand and doesnt mind being picked up and is very curious.
When is it old enough to find out its sex?.Im thinking they are like geckos where the male has the pores and bulges?

I can determine in most cases at 6". But at 12" you can be sure.

why do you want to move him onto sand? if its for looks, then you know the risk you are taking to do so. if its for him to be more "natural" im assuming hes captive born, and so has never been on sand, so he cant miss it. if its to be easier to clean, i have had them on sand (before i knew i could do diffrent) and ill tell you its not as easy as newspaper (my fave choice) or other alternitives, carpet is easy to clean, newspaper is really easy to clean (and free).
