New Cage and a question....

hurricanebama Jan 06, 2008 08:26 PM

I just built this new cage. The dog figurines wont stay. I will put a large water bowl there and the doors slide up and down. There is a hole in the middle so the snakes will be able to go back and forth to both sides. I have had alot of snakes in my past (havent had one in about 5 years) but I have always wanted an Emerald Tree Boa or a Green Tree Python. I have been reading as much as possible about them but I cant find much info on having more than 1 in the same cage. I never had any problems with my Carpet Pythons being housed together. I dont plan on breeding so I will try to get the same sex. Is it a bad idea to keep them together? Is my cage big enough? Thanks, any info is much appreciated.

Housing two in the same cage is a very bad idea unless you are breeding at the time... Males can and probably will fight to the death...
The main problem with housing two Green Tree Pythons in the same cage is their strong feeding response... The changes of one mistaking another for a meal is high... Second if one gets sick and has a bad deification, which one was it??? Third if they are together they share health problems... Fourth one may not eat or both may not eat because of the stress caused from the other's presence in the cage... The list is about 10 pages long, and in my opinion is consistent for most snakes if not all... I would suggest you have either two cages or just one snake...

Not real sure about that cage either... It's not something I would put one of my snakes in, but it might work? I would recommend using a cage designed for Chondro's...

Hope this helps

Thanks for all the info. What is it that you dont like about the cage for chondros? I can still change it. I dont have a snake yet. I was building it for a ETB or a GTP. thanks again for the advice

I personally think you should make it 2 separate cages... Keeping it simple has been proven to work and I love simple...

First reason I say this is because I would be concerned how even your temps are from one cage to the next... And again how high can you keep the humidity in something like that? Keeping the humidity high in one cage can provide to be a task at times, so combining "two cages" into one might make thing pretty difficult...

If you separate them and make two separate cages you will probably be ok as long as your heat source is acceptable and in my opinion Heat Panels are 100 times better then any heat light... You might go pick up a copy of the Feb 2008 issue or Reptiles Magazine... There is an article on page 36 that might help with deciding if you want to use heat panels or heat lights...

Good Luck
