Is it too late?

merlinh2o Jan 07, 2008 12:40 PM

The blunt of my question is that my beardie is just under a year old (probably 10 or 11 months) and she has grown to the size of about 6 months...is it too late for her to become a healthy full grown beardie?

Details: I bought my lizard from the local pet store, at the same time I also got a second one who's health very quickly deteriorated and I took him back and replaced with a third (same age, not sure if they were siblings or not). My original lizard had a very healthy appetite and ate crickets very well. The third lizard, within a month, stopped eating and after taking him to the vet, was diagnosed with assumed cakidia (sorry, i have no idea how to spell it), but at that point, it wasn't eating so it also wasn't pooping and couldn't get a decent fecal sample. I was giving this gel to put on its eyes and powdered food to orally feed. He didn't get any better and died after a few weeks.

My original lizard, and the one I am concerned with today, has not been eating for at least 4 months now. I fed her rosy reds because I was willing to try anything and she actually ate a few for about a week or two. Other than that, I've been force feeding greens/fruits/veggies from approved list. Her tank has been heated with a UVB lamp that she can easily get withing a few inches of. I have two bulbs, a 150 and 100w, which I just replaced to have 2 150w. Tank temperatures range from 100-110 under basking to about 70 on cold and at night. About half way through her non eating, I moved her from a 35 gallon tank to 75 and from the cold living room to my bedroom where the heat would be more contained and get less cold at night. Also, I replaced the small UVB to a full length brand new UVB (48" reptisun 10). I've been concerned for a long time but somehow a couple weeks turn into a couple months and at this point I don't want her to suffer if something is wrong.

One thing that she will eat consistently is dried meal worms, and if I put food in her mouth, even live crickets, she will take them without much struggle and eat. She licks at things and since putting the 2nd 150w bulb in, she's been a little more active. Though she sleeps a lot, she has never had problems with holding her head up or other symptoms like cloudy eyes. The only thing I can think of is that when she first stopped eating, she also wasn't getting her calcium or vitamins and thus her body hasn't developed properly. I had a fecal sample done and it came back clean-- no parasites. Is there any chance she will grow to full length (right now she's 12.5" long and about 6.5" around the biggest part of her tummy)? Any advise, tips, suggestions.....anything? I am very open for anything.

First off to refer to "lizard", I assume you mean Bearded Dragon? I wish I knew his weight it helps more than length.

Referring to the dragon? that died. You mention you were given a gel for his eyes? What was this treatment for? If he was diagnosed with coccidia then the treatment would be Albon orally. It sounds like he was exposed to too much or the wrong UVB to me. Possibly from the bulb being too close. Also you refer to a "small UVB". Was that a compact fluorescent?

You should be OK now with the 48" Reptisun 10.0. Just don't allow him to get closer than 6".

As far as food. I would not recommend you feed any kind of roaches to a dragon that size. I would try a soft bodied caterpillar like Silkworms, Hornworms, or Butterworms. I would stay away from waxworms, they are too fatty.

Lastly, with the right conditions I believe she will grow to a normal adult weight and length.
