leatherbacks will have no scales on the back at all.it will feel like well, leather, instead of the usual rough bumpy scales a bearded dragon will normally have.

Actually the absence of scales would be a silkback. A leatherback has scales but none of the pointy scales so it feels smoother and looks like leather grain. Sometimes leatherbacks are called smoothies.

Leatherbacks are missing the Tubercles(raised scales) on their upper backs. Silks are completly void of any scales period.

Ahh...well, I stand corrected....never actually realized there were scales left over...or even a difference between silkies and leatherbacks...Now I know

hi
if you take 2 leatherback then you get silk dragon .
if you take a leatherback the italien type and put those on a normal dragon ,leatherbacks wil come out.
smootie is not same as leatherback .
they have scaled but its reduced.
if am right if you put twoo smooties on eachother then you have change on leatherbacks.

please corect me when am wrong

hi
ok mine friend have explained it to me i wil translate it.

you have 2 kinds , co-diminante also named smootie thats the italien line .
in america there also is now a co dominante line.

these leatherbacks r hets for silkback
so if you put a leatherback hets for silk x leatherback hets for silk then you get =
25% normal50%leatherback hets for silk and 25% silkies

leatherback hets for silk x normal wil give you
50% leatherbacks hets for silk and 50% normal

silkbacks r dominante if you put a silkback x normal
you get 100% leatherback hets for silk

the second type is a recesieve type its the same way passing trough as the hypo,s and translucants.
out that type you cant get silkbacks !!!!

hope i translated well

If you breed a Leather to a "normal" you should get about P Leather, P normal.
If you breed a Leather to a Leather you get P normal, % Leather and % Silks.
If you breed a Silk to a normal you get all Leathers.

There is no "hets" here. Co-dom is co-dom. If you breed co-doms together you get the "super" form which is the Silk.

To get a "het" the parents/parent need to be recessive.
Recessive would be a Hypo or a Trans.

To have a het here you would need to breed a Hypo or a Trans to a Leather. Doing that would pass the recessive gene down to the babies giving you Leatherbacks het Hypo or Trans.

It should read:
50% Leather, 50% normal
50% normal, 25% Leather and 25% Silks.

What would a reduced tubercles dragon be considered? I have two dragons that aren't as smooth as a leatherback, yet certainly do not have the 'normal' tubercles down the back and tail. From comparing these to pictures of the dad of one of them, who was a smoothie, they're not quite as smooth as that either, but close.
