What Substrate does everyone use?

spydergirl Aug 26, 2003 01:10 AM

I've heard many different options about substrate and was wondering which everyone uses and what its pros and cons are.

I use the soft kind of cage carpet, and it does the trick perfectly. I keep 2 other spares,so whenever its soiled(which seems to ALWAYS be as soon as i put a new piece in,darn snake) I just take it out and throw it in the laundry. I dont see many cons too it,its perfect for me, no scooping out poops. I used to use safe dirt for bedding, but it was too much of a pain and have since switched, luckily it was after the first feeding.

I just use newspaper. I know it is not the most pretty thing, but my BP is not really a "display" animal anyway, seeing as she spends almost all of her time sleeping. Newspaper is not a danger at feeding time (I heard of a gecko who swallowed some calci-sand during feeding, so to be on the safe side I rule out any substrate that the snake could swallow...), and I get the Pennysaver free anyway, so no cos for this substrate. Since we have a fire every week or so out here, I just burn the used paper. Nothing could be simpler!

We use Cypress mulch right now (needed to increase humididity for a shed and have not gone back to newspaper yet)
have not had enough experience to share more

I use newspaper. I get free fliers every Thursday, so free snake bedding I'm pretty new to keeping BPs and don't much about them but I noticed you said you throw your soiled carpets in the laundery. Something I do know a bit about is germs and parasites, since that's what my job entails, and I do know that washing machines aren't usually hot enough to kill some fecal germs and some parasites. If you're not doing it already, I'd reccommend washing your carpets seperate from clothes and linens (I'd put them in with rugs and bath mats maybe) and maybe spraying them down with a disinfectant before going in the wash.

Oh,of course! I wouldnt throw them in with my clothes, uck! usually ill throw it in the laundrywith the dog towels and other animal stuff that need washing-which there is PLENTY of and then ill soak it in HOT water and let it air dry. No biggie. I have all my animals on display, and like to give all my guys nice elaborate setups, so the carpet gives it a nicer touch then newspaper.

Hi Elizabeth!say HI to all for me!

I use newspaper on the bottom of the tank with a layer of bark on top about an inch or so deep. It works for me.
