baby rhino iguanas

swilson86 Jan 08, 2008 11:34 PM

hello everybody! i'm wondering if it's possible to sex baby rhino iguanas?

i had a 3 foot male that regrettably passed away early. hours after finding him dead i had an autopsy done by my vet to try and figure out what killed him and it was the strangest thing...all of his insides except his bones were pretty much liquified...i and my vet are still, to this day, baffled what could've done it. but when i bought him as a neonate, i didn't know what sex he was. so i am thinking about taking the plunge back into cyclura, but i was wondering if babies are sexable.

thank you for taking the time to read.

only if your reallly good but not 100% guranteed, its 100% guranteed at 3 yrs of age....

thank you for the response. so the likelihood of ordering a baby male rhino iguana is very slim.

actually for some reason i would say75% of a clutch turns out to be male in captivity, that ive seen anyway, temps are harder to obtain i guess, but males are much more common than females, if you got one from KWE or david blair im sure they'd do there best to sex it , but they wont gurantee it ...

I bought a male rhino in 2000 and a female in 01 from david blair (herpnut.com) he was able to sex them at 3 months of age. He was right on I have one male and one female that have now been proven breeders.

thanks for the reply! and wow, gorgeous animal...i'm kinda scared to get back into cycluras. i'm actually still very sad over what happened with my male over 2 years ago. eventhough it was something that i didn't know was going to happen, and it happened so suddenly...i still feel like i failed him, and don't want that to happen again.

but damn...it's hard to stay away from cyclura! they're such wonderful animals

well what happened with your last cyclura, is weird for sure, but it doesnt happen that often, if you keep temps correct then they will survive... best of luck in your choice ...
