whites treefrog just clings onto glass...

May 22, 2003 06:34 PM

hey all the frog wants to do is stay on the left top side of the tank. It doesn't go on the corkbark, or the drift wood, or anything else. Last night it went in the water bowl to poop.

one more thing, i've noticed that when it was eating it just jumps towards the direction of the cricket, and sometimes banging it self gently on the glass/plants. Will this be a problem? I tried feeding it day old pinkies, that didn't work, i'll try week old pinkies later

WTF's are not diurnal they are nocturnal, so he will do alot of sleeping during the day on the glass. if your frogs are jumping for a cricket and hiting themselves on the glass/plant it is nothing to worry about. also, do NOT feed your frogs pinkies more then one per month, frogs digestive system is not built to handle the bones of a pinkie/ and pinkies are VERY high in fat, and if fed consitently on pinkies, your frog will die of kidney failure.

WTFs sleep all day stuck to the glass - in time it may pick the glass behind the corkbark, give it some time to acclimate. To help decrease him jumping into the glass, be sure there is background on 3 sides of the tank. One he then can't see through it - which he has no concept of glass, if he can see through it, he can go through it in his mind. The background also helps decrease stress by giving them a sense of security. As far as his activity, he is going to sleep all day in the same spot without moving - that is a GOOD sign. He will come down at night, hunt for crix, soak in the water bowl - where they often pee and poop at while they're there and maybe hand out a bit before returning to their sleeping spot. The longer you have him, the better you prove to him that you will not hurt him, the more comfortable he will be around you. This sometimes takes months but it well worth it in the end. Do not hold him, do not disturb him when he is sleeping, do not turn lights on in the room he is in at night to look at him, feed him and keep his water clean and he will acclimate well to captivity and have a long healthy life. Hope this helps.

also, he hides in this little hiding log thing now, it's like he prefers total darkness.

can i use a red light to see him at night?

anson May 23, 2003 03:37 PM

Yes. to view mine I use a dim red light at night in a totally dark room. Make sure its not too hot in there with it on too long. I only use the light when I am viewing and switch it off when I leave unless its really cold and you need it for heat.

lukeybaby May 23, 2003 08:44 PM

only use a red incandescent light if they need more heat, even if u do use it at night to view your frogs, not all frog's like the light which it emits. when i used it on my WTF's they did not come out at night anymore, so i got rid of it.

i notice that he comes out at night sometimes, but most of the time he's on the ground hiding in his log, just like at the store.
Shouldn't treefrogs be in the trees?

can i keep an australian whites treefrog with an indo one?
In a 29 gallon tank or bigger.

becki May 23, 2003 11:02 PM

Yes, you can use a dim red light to view him with at night - however, as Luke mentioned not all of them like the lights at night and will not come out under them. And, yes, treefrogs should hide in the "trees" not on the ground. If I recall correctly from the pics of your tanks, there aren't many plants in it right now - think you're waiting to add live ones (again if memory serves me correctly) - but try adding some large artificial plants around the basking spot (in that corner) and see if that helps get him out from under the log. Also be sure there is background on the back and both sides of the tank. Keep in mind that it will take some time for him to get used to his surroundings. i know he's new nd you want to see him alot but sometimes the best way to get them acclimated is to give them as much seclusion as possible at first and they will slowly come around. I have a w/c frog who I had to cover all 4 sides of the tank for quite some time when I first brought her home. And lastly yes you can put an Indo and an Aussie in a tank together. A 29 is really pushing it at being too smal for 2 adult WTFs. The general rule for bare minimums are 20 for 1 and 10 for each additional so that's 30 for 2 and bigger is always better. You would also need to quarantine the new frog in a tank by itself for 3 months before adding it to your present frog - this is to be sure that there is no disease or illness present to be spread. Hope this helps!

thanks, im gonna remove all the leaves from the ground and put it up along the top...
thanks.

Becki May 24, 2003 10:18 PM

Plants at the bottom are good to - you need them in both places, lots of plants. Instead of moving some from one place to another, add more.
Hope this helps!

yes, but 29 gallon would be the MINIMUM size enclosure to keep 2 WTF's in

he is probably sleeping in that log because there are no aboreal hiding spots.

Hey dude,

Be thankful your frog is within viewing area. My frogs completely hide. Well, one of them likes the corner glass area near the top. The other likes to chill deep within the fake leaves and corkbark.

I only feed my frogs cricketts which I shake n' bake in a bag with calcium powder. I also feed the cricketts oates and guttload. My 2 frogs only move at night. They will just stay in one spot and lunge towards their food. Occassionally they take in some dirt in their mouth too.

May 24, 2003 07:55 PM

have u had any problems with keeping 2 frogs together? Any fighting/accidents? with accidents i meant the frog could confuse the other one as food and lunge at it?

lukeybaby May 25, 2003 05:49 PM

WTF's can be territorial, males will sometimes lunge and bite other males. this usually happens when they are sexually mature and willing to breed. but this is nothing to worry about because they will not harm each other.
