Can hognoses be kept on eco-earth?

alebron Jan 09, 2008 06:51 PM

Would this coconut fiber be fine, as long as I feed to the hognose in a different container? It is aproximately 9 inches in length and is on reptile carpet (the felt type stuff). I feel bad since it is trying to dig through the felt. I have some extra coconut fiber left over from my crested gecko.

You may want to consider using aspen chips or some other type of bedding that allows it to burrow. I would avoid the coco fiber bedding unless you plan to use it bone dry. Over time, laying in moist bedding will cause health problems for almost any reptile.

I agree that it is not the ideal substrate. It order to keep it from being a nuisance dust, you have to keep it moist. Hogs really shouldn't be kept on moist substrate. So that gets a little tough. Relative to the cost of a single veterinary visit, I don't think that getting a bag of aspen shavings is that big of a burden to have for one animal. Aspen is the ideal substrate.

Cypress should be fine. I have used it before but not for hogs. Some feed stores will sell "sani-chips" (aspen chips) for far less than pet stores. I get a 2.5 cubic foot bag for $8. This is lab grade bedding at that.
