Hi, welcome to the forum.
when you probbed your thayeri did you happen to count the scales? I mark the probe depth with my fingernail then line it up next to the tail and count the scales to see if it is male or female. males generally probe deeper than females.

that seems awfully shallow for a male...my GUESS is female

thanks...what is making this hard for me to determine is that this animal probes noticeably less than my male but much deeper than my females...it was sold to me as a female

I was thinking the same, because I have a few mexicana females that have a similar look just be for the tail, where it dramatically thins out.

Two are virgin grey bands and two are thayeri. Do you know what causes that? Is it normal or are they just too fat? I know lizards store fat in their tails so I would assume a fat snake would just have a fat tail.

Do you have pics of these females?

I find that females have a more narrow tail. I beleive it is because they lack the hemipenis's. Please share pic's if you can.
take care,

Here's 2 pics that I had, you can see it on each. They are down for the winter so I would have to get them out to take better ones.

That is an extra supply of fat. Mexicana are prone to it as are some milks. I feed all my mexicana adult mice in the winter to help avoid it.

I have also heard it compared to cellulite for herps. It would be a good idea to consider a "diet" for animals with this kind of buildup... Most often though I have heard it does not seem to greatly impact health, but nobody knows sure enough to make that a promise.

I am in shape, Round is a shape

Hopefully they will burn some of it off in hibernation. I dont think their bodies look obese though, which was why I was wondering.

I guess it is just fat, neither was gravid.
