Babay western hognose...too small for pinks, need help!

snakecharmed Aug 26, 2003 03:30 AM

Hi everyone, I sure hope someone can help me out here. I have 2 baby western hognose snakes that hatched about 2 weeks ago. They shed around the second day after coming out of the egg and seem healthy, but they look too small to eat pinks. I have tried to feed them several times with no luck. I have tried with the smallest pinks that I could get, but they still look too big for the babies. I have tried toad scenting, still no luck. I have even tried keeping the pinks away from the mother mouse for a day or 2 as someone suggested, but the pinks always die around day 2. What has worked for you guys? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Christy

I don't think they are too small for pinks, I have a hatchling Wesstern Hog who is also very small but he eats f/t with no problems (knock on wood)...have you tried offering baby toads? What scenting methods are you using?
Are you just leaving the pink in there with the snake?
have you tried leaving it alone with the pinky in a deli cup over-night?
Have you tried "tauting" the snake with the pink, or bumping his nose with the pink?

Answer those questions and it will allow others on this board to offer more help, myself included, best of luck with your situation!

P.S. i sorta know how you feel I have two hatchling honduran milks that constantly refuse F/T...They have taken a total of 3 F/T pinky's between the two of them and refused over 5...just don't give up keep offering every two or three days and hopefully you will end up successful.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried scenting them with a toad (I rub the pinky on the toad and then put the pink in with the snake). I have left the pinks and the baby snakes in a deli cup over night, I have teased them with the pinks, I have tried almost everything. I haven't tried feeding them small toads yet and I guess that will be my next step. Christy

heres what I did .first I would just rub the f/t pinkie all over the live toad and leave it in with the snake for a few hours , if that did not work then I put a small live toad in with the snake and when he starts going after the toad then I hold the pinkie in front of him and he will grab the pinkie by mistake and stert eating the pinkie thinking he has the toad . and if he gets the toad first then at least hes eating and you can try it again next time . hope this helps .
