white palm vipers

ArnoldChan Aug 26, 2003 04:24 AM

hello,

im not into vipers at all. i live in the philippines and collect mainly amazon basin emeralds. i was at a friends zoo collection the other day, where he showcased over 100 endemic reptiles to me.

because i am into arboreals, i couldnt help but notice the collection of incredible looking arboreal vipers he had.

how rare are solid yellow/white/red/green palm vipers, i believe they were all trimeresurus.

my email is corallus@asia.com

i will be interested in learning more.

thank you for reading,
Arnold

For starters The common name "Palm Viper" usually refers to Neo tropical vipers. TFH has a book out entittled Eyelash and Temple vipers (the guide to owning) Hunziker RE152. This lists several species that should fit your (Green) criteria. It does not list T. Mcgregori which has white or yellow phases. Also T.flavomaculatus can be solid yellow. As far as solid red or orange, I am not familiar with a Trimerserus to would fit. Are you sure he doesn't have some Atheris, or possibly some B. Schlegeli? You might want to contact on line ZOO Book Sellers for more references. Frank

There is a solid red population of Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus which is occasionly avalible here in the states that may fit that criteria. However, im not sure if purpureomaculatus should be the proper name. Its the pet trade name but yu know how that goes. They are definately an isolated population (from what I have gathered from keepers well versed in Trimeresurus)if not there own ssp or sp but im sure more work needs to be done with the genus so whatever they are considered now may not be valid anymore. Ill look into it.

God, dont you love this taxonomy stuff???

All the best,
Jeremy

Hey Jeremy,

Easy now: if I can learn this "stuff" so can everybody else (LOL, LOL, LOL)!

I am seriously considering on making the Columbia SC show.

Are you still going to make it?

Derek K.

Hey Derek,
Good hearing from ya man. Did I screw up and spell the purps name wrong again? Dang it!! Come on, with a name like that can ya blame me?!?!?

Yeah bud, I should be attending SC. I have to bring a snake to someone and will be there atleast for one day.

Sorry I didnt get bacl to ya last time. I was so busy trying to make extra pennies at work of my FL trip last week (and I still came out under BTWI spent very little time net surfing.

Anyway, Ill find out if im going to make it one day or both and I will let ya know.

BTW, heard from Filthy lately? Havent seen him post anything lately (although I havent been to Don's site in a good while either). Hope the old canker sore in the hot herp hobby is still kicking and screaming LOL Filth

Talk with ay soon bud,
J

BTW, any take on the redish phase T.purps? I was looking at EMBL and they mentioned an old ssp of the purp which came from the Nicabar Islands. I belive it is now T.andersoni or sonthing like that. Any chance this could be the redish phase I am reffering too? Ive asked about before but got nothing in return.

Ferdelance_1 Aug 27, 2003 02:34 AM

Hey Jeremy,

First: T. andersoni is definitely a valid species, and was once a subspecies of T. purpureomaculatus. As to whether or not it is the "Red phase", I haven't a clue. Assigning this particular serpent the common name of Anderson's PitViper doesn't described it too well (LOL). In addition, I always get confused when it comes to the Genus Trimeresurus, because of all their color phases (Doah ?), so I can't help you with regard to this issue. Maybe someone who reads this can?

Second: Filthy posted quite recently at the (HS), and is supposedly going to be at Columbia. I posted a response, but no reply.

Third: I am calling for motel reservations today, and will be definitely at Columbia the entire weekend. I am taking two days to drive down, probably leave on the 11th of September. I will, (I hope providing I get a reservation), be staying the same place as Chris Harper, adjacent to the restaurant where the SHHS Banquet will be held.

Fourth: I am looking forward to seeing you again (!), (and meeting all those I have electronically communicated with for the past four years); this occasion should be a "BLAST" ! ! !

Fifth: I pray nothing happens to prevent either of us from from making the trip to Columbia, because I will have your loner book, (The Aggy Complex), in my possession at Columbia.

Very Best Regards,

Derek K.

P.S. Please let me know where and when we can meet at Columbia.

Hey Derek,
Thanks a ton for the info. Now if we can just track down a pic of T.andersoni perhaps I can answer my own question Ill probally post a request for one on the Viperade forum and see if anyone can help. Hope so.

Secondly, I will probally be there for both dayu but will definately be there the first day and at the banquet. Its going to be a blast hooking up with everyone! SC is great because alot of the guys from down south, who never take their lazy arses up tp PA usualy attend this show. Quess I cant blame em even though I trucked my butt al the way down the Daytona from VA!!!

Good deal on the book bud. I hope you have enjoyed barrowing it. One of the best herpitlogical peices of lituature ever written IMHO. BHTW, you know the magnificant drawings in the back of the book? Thomas (aka Nightflight)purchased a copy of that page autographed by conant him self!!! There were 2 copies but I had unfortunately already spent the last of my pennies on Dangerous snake of OZ and couldnt swing it If I see it again Im getting it (unless you beat me to it

Well bud, Ill hit ya up in a week or so when the show nears alittle more and I figure out exactly what im going to do. With any luck Derek morgan will be there as well, makeing the show all the better.

Take care man,
Jeremy

for him (LOL.)

Hello Michael,

It appears that you will be making the show at Columbia SC.

Hope to see you there!

By the way: if by chance thru your sources, you have obtained a confirmed date as to when Campbell and Lamars'(SP) new book Venomous Snakes of the Western Hemisphere, (I think that's the latest title), will be published/hit the market, please let me know via EMAIL or at the Columbia show.

I am not able to Email WW anymore because of spam or whatnot. My messages inadvertly get deleted. Also I hate to keep bugging him on this subject matter, even though I consider it imperative that I latch on to a copy before they go out of print.

Also I apologize for any failure on my part to reply to some of your follow up Emails in the past.

Any help will be appreciated!

Cheers,

Derek K.

P.S. My Email address is ferdelance_1@hotmail.com or Dispholidustypus@earthlink.net
