Mazuri Diet

caiman_1 Jan 11, 2008 12:41 AM

Hello all ! I have been keeping a spec caiman CB06 for about 7 months now. I have been mainly feeding him pinkies 95% and fish 5% (not goldfish). He usually has about 8 live pinkies each week and the count that he has eaten till date is about 200 pinkies. I got an order of Croc Mazuri and thinking of feeding that as a full diet. All mazuri, nothing else.

Two questions :
1. Will the caiman like Mazuri pellets after having live food ?
2. How do I know how much in quantity to feed the caiman ? Maybe experiment a bit and find out ?

Thanks!

I certainly hope you are supplementing. Pinkies are not a sufficient source of calcium.

Some animals will eat, others won't. You would be better off buying a smaller bag and testing it to see if your animal will eat it than to purchase the large bag to find out he won't.

I typically provide it to them gradually until they stop eating. My alligator will eat a fair number of the large biscuits, but after a while, he will slow down and not take them so quickly. Many of them will just sit and float. If that happens, be sure to clean out the remainder left in the enclosure to lower the fouling of the water. This diet is notorious for that and you can be rest assured that you will have more frequent water changes after feeding this diet. However, it's the best on the market and well worth the work.

Yes, I did rub the calcium powder on the pinkies before the feed, but he doesnt seem to like it much. I had bought a Rep-Cal, Calcium powder.

You are right on the water degrade quality. Many other folks said the same on the forum. I cant even see the croc in water. I just cant tell with the smaller pellets how many he has eaten or left out. They soak and go to the bottom of the enclosure in water, some float. If he doesnt like the mazuri, I'll go back to the pinkies. I bought a 5 lb bag for starters (damn), do dogs like em

Maybe try feeding him frozen pinkies then go from there. That probably would have been better to do from the start. A lot cheaper and would probably more readily take the pellets.
Just a thought, I dont know how well that would work but wouldnt hurt to try.

I have not had much luck with the Mazuri diet unfortunately. The spec caiman does not like the change from live pinkies. It makes the water so think and invisible and also stinks up the entire place. I tried putting them on land, but doesnt look like he ate them. Oh well...back to pinkies. Anyone else who has had success with Mazuri with a young caiman ?
