Male Hog Island won’t eat, he only wants his girlfriend. He missed 2 meals while my female boas are eating fine as ever. (I feed them weekly smaller than average size meals because a couple of my boas like to take their prey backwards sometimes, and the male has a small head.) He just paces and wrinkles up his newspapers, and smashes his nose into the door until I put him back with the female after she’s digested her meal for a couple days.

I’ve had them paired on and off for about 6 weeks now, but it’s their first time, maybe just now figuring it out. I’m not sure if I’ve witnessed successful breeding, usually dark and I don’t want to disturb them.

I’m getting a little concerned since it’s been almost 3 weeks since he’s eaten, he’s always been thin to begin with. Scheduled to try feeding again in a couple days. I’m new to breeding boas, is this normal behavior, or should I be worried?

My hog island males often go off food this time of year for a while, often for a a couple of months. Once breeding season is over they always eat like champs again. I would not worry about it. They can go months without food if they have been eating regularly in the off season. Randy W.

If he's a healthy guy, missing a few meals ain't gonna hurt him any. It's actually better for him to not eat so frequently IMO.

Good luck on the pairing.

He's sure acting healthy. ;^)

I used to feed every 10-14 days, but I noticed other people's snakes were heavier, so I switched to weekly feeding. When they graduate to larger prey I'll feed less often.
