Good news/bad news

odin22 Jan 11, 2008 05:48 PM

Hello

The blessed (and cursed) day has arrived! My Odin (Columbian) just gave birth this afternoon to a litter of about 23, including one slug and a sadly two-headed (split skull) baby, which died earlier this evening.

The babies are adorable, the goo is everywhere, and the mother, having been HUNGRY, has now been fed....and is looking for more food.

Odin is the first of our two pregnant females who were bred by our IBD-infected male to deliver. Freya will be due on or about the end of the month. I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow to put Odin and her babies down.

It's been a manic-depressive day.

I wish the best to everyone and their litters to come. May your babies all be healthy.

Thank you April and Dave.
And thank you to everyone else who said that this path is the right thing to do. I'm going to be clinging to that thought for at least the next 24 hours.

See some people do listen to good advice they get from here.

It's hard enough just to hear about it.
I want to say - "I take it all back. Are you sure?"
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

That is a bummer, I can not believe someone else has a pet named Freya, that is my dogs name. My daughter picked it out when she read that Freya was pulled by a team of cats, if you have ever been on the other end of a bullmasiff's leash when a cat runs by you understand. Sorry for your animals. Craig Kade

I'm sorry you had to make that painful decision, my sympathies are with you. I can only imagine what you are going through. I don't know how I'd take it honestly, I'd be broken up.
I do believe that you are doing the right thing, since there was no doubt they all would've had IBD or been carriers, right? So I have the utmost respect for you doing the right thing. Many people would have just sent those babies out into the world for someone else to fall in love with, only to see them start to fall apart eventually, or to pass it to entire collections. Very intelligent and mature of you to choose what you have, but nobody should have to feel the way I'm sure you are feeling now.
Curious though to know, I can't remember the full post before... how long had Midnight been with you before he was tested (Did he pass away before you took him in to find out why he passed?) and how long was he sick before then? I know that not all snakes will exhibit the exact symptoms, if you'd like to shoot me an email and re-share the story, I'd appreciate it. The more I learn about IBD, the more I feel paranoia over it... I'm always trying to define what the most common signs are and learn whatever I can in case it finds its way to my home, and my brood. I've related the story and your post with my Mother who has been apart of my life and supported my hobby for years. I started to tear up for you when I told her your story. She wishes you the best as well.
Good luck with everything, I hope all goes well and quickly for you and your pets.

But why didn't you put down the mother prior to her giving birth (rather than dealing with euthanizing all of her offspring)?

I believe I missed the story of what happened, so I'm sure there's a good reason, I just don't know what it could be.

Terribly sorry for your loss.

That was covered more than once in previous posts. Based on the vet's best advice.

Hi:

The short answer was that by the time the father's necropsy came back POSITIVE for IBD, Odin was just about due to have her babies. Killing her would not have killed the babies quickly--the vet said they'd have to be removed and killed individually anyway. And the vet refused to do it.

They were such cute pookies.;/

Okay, that's the answer I was looking for. I wasn't around for the original posts.
Thanks!

That is an awful thing to have to make a decision about.
