Striped Rats

stevefounduk Aug 26, 2003 06:57 AM

Hi, I am new around here

I currently have
3 Elaphe Gutatta,
1 Elaphe Schrencki,
1 Elaphe Anomala,
1 Elaphe Obsoleta Spiloides,
1 Mexican nightsnake / Yellow ratsnake hybrid
2 Striped ratsnakes ( Obsoletta ? )

I have recently acquired the 2 yearling Striped / Patternless rat snakes and am trying to do some research into their genetic background.

Has anyone come across these ???

They are light brown in colour ( Pine wood coloured ) with 4 stripes in the positions of a yellow rat, these are dark brown and are blackening with age. I believe them to be man-made hybrids of Yellow / Everglades rats, but unlike normal obsoleta these snakes are born striped with no saddles at all.

Any help on their ancestry would be greatly appreciated.

Steve.

Do you have a pic? Very curious as to what this cross looks like.

Your striped Rats, could they be Four-Lined Ratsnakes?

Hi Aaron,

The Mexican/Yellow is a rescue whose ancestry I was told by the ex-owner... I don't have a picture at present, but I can try to do some tonight.

I do not 'honestly' believe the crosses because there is a corn like head pattern ( Which as far as I can see from pictures the mexican does not have.. and yellows certainly don't ) and he/she is around 3.5 feet long at 4 years. I would have expected it to be longer.

However, I can find no other snake apart from the Mexican that has the patterning on the back and sides, so I can see where they are coming from. They are much bigger than any from a corn !!!

I am left wondering whether this could be a ( corn x yellow ) x Mexican... I will definately get some pictures up.

The Striped are definately 'Mainly' Obsoleta based. I am just curious if anyone knows what percentage of what species are in their genetics. Yellow and Everglades are definately in there but gawd knows what else... I will grab some pictures of one of these too.

Steve.
