three-lined salamanders

bmadd May 22, 2003 06:47 PM

I just got two three-lined salamanders recently and would like to learn more about them. I feed mine small earthworms. Im thinking about small grasshoppers but i dont know if they would eat them or not. How often do they need to be fed. They will be in my room in the basement so will i need a heating lamp or can they stay in the cool. what about vitamins and stuff?

No heat lamp they have to be kept cool.

so keeping them in my basement is no problem?

You probably don't need a heat lamp, because wherever I found threelineds, it was a cool creekside area. I would make sure it is not too frigid, though, not like subzero or anything. I never personally could get threeolioneds to eat in captivity, but if you do, that's cool.

If your basement is heated then there will be problems. Three lines salamanders (Eurycea l. guttolineata) need to be kept below 72 F at all times. Temps over 75 F will stress the animal and potentially kill it.
Feeding is not a problem as long as the food items are appropriatly sized for the salamander. Fruit flies and ten day old crickets (size between pinheads and 14 dya old crickets) are fine as are small pieces of earth worms (cut to size and offered on tweezers).
