Is wider better than deeper?

KevMadden Jan 12, 2008 09:01 AM

Considering two vision cages for large female BCC. The Vision 432 (4.5' x 3') or the 622 (6' x 2.5'). Both have almost the same amount of floor space. My question with the wider cage better for boas than the deeper cage?

Thanks

Kevin

I'd go with the first one. Depending on your setup you could probably fit more cages that are shorter and wider than ones that are longer and narrower.

I know quiet a few breeders that use the standard 4' long boa cages but get them 30" deep instead of 24" deep. I've been considering doing that myself for some of my larger boas (their still young now, but future planning).

Hey Chris do you think it is harder to clean or reach into the 30" one instead of the 24" cuz my arm is like 27". Another thing I have been thinking about is the AP cages you are talking about. Is there a reason you went with the sliders as opposed to the swing doors and a keyed lock? Can the tracks for the glass or acrylic get filled with pine or aspen? thanks again for the advice
Bob

Bob, you shouldn't use Pine, but yes, the Aspen does get into the track.

I use a rather thick layer of Aspen. I am looking at those corrugated liners and think I am going to try those out instead. I can score them with a razor knife and fold them to ride up along the sides a bit, basically making a tray to fit the bottom tightly. This will prevent them from getting under it, and make cleaning easy (nothing to get stuck in corners).

I also stir up the Aspen when I mist so that is does not get packed down. So the boas sometimes crawl under it and lift it up and into the track. I usually just blow it out when the doors are open. Every so often I take the tracks off and vacuum them out.

The sliding glass cages do have locks.

Tough to see in this pic, but that black looking circle is actually a lock. It is keyed, and a locking pin slides through a key hole and through both glass panes and into a recess in the front panel.

The lock is chrome and has a white or black washer on it to match the cage. That one pictured is black because the wrong one got sent out, they sent a replacement that I have since put in, but the picture was taken before that.

I went with the sliding glass because I like the style, and I like how glass is clearer. Acrylic will never be as clear as glass and it shows scratches and ware a lot more. You can only clean acrylic with soap and water and even using paper towels you damage the surface. Acrylic also bows with the heat and humidity. That, and just personal preference here I am not a fan of the AP hinged doors. Even if they were glass.

As you can probably guess I'd be getting AP cages if I get 30" deep, and they are tall enough to get your head in easily to reach the back. Ease of cleaning is why I generally don't like deep racks or cages. A lot of plastic racks have an easily removable back panel to allow you to clean the shelves without much fuss. I think a lot of people forget about these issues with racks or cages, and the limits that you arm will stretch. Those are also cons for many shorter cages. My boaphiles I can get my head into if I go sideways, but it's annoying, lol. That's why I prefer taller cages, that and it allows for a shelf.

So, did I go too far off, or is this what you were looking for?
