worried about my Panther

mrgrumps Jan 12, 2008 10:00 AM

I have a 6 month old Panther, my 2nd panther, 3rd cham overall. Anyway, I am not a novice but just now I saw something that shocked me.

I heard a funny whining sound from my cham cage. I went over checked out my little buddy. he had this bloody/red "thing" is all I can describe it hanging out of the hole under his tale he does his business in. It looked like a blood clot or something, then, all of a sudden he sucked it back in and that was that. I am freaked out

Would this be a young male by any chance?

Probably what you saw was his hemipenes (male reproductive organ). Normally hemipenes are tucked inside the body. When mating, the hemipenes will poke out of the vent. This can also happen when the lizard is just excited, and sometimes with defecation. It should return inside quite quickly. Once in a while male lizards experience prolapse of the hemipenes, where they are not able to retract. This is a serious condition. If that happens Keep the area moist with sugary water and sterile lumbricant (not petroleum jelly) and get to the vet ASAP.
