Snakes and my wife

newtosnakes Aug 26, 2003 07:48 AM

I hope someone can help me. I have read a couple of books on keeping ball pythons as pets. It just so happens that a guy I work with has two Ball Pythons he is willing to give me for free. This includes all the accessories also. He said if I don't take them he will have them destroyed. My wife has agreed to let me get them so they can be saved. But she is deathly afraid of snakes. She has stated that they are to remain in my office at home. And if one of them ever gets out that will be it and I will have to get rid of them. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can convince her that these are not mean snakes by nature. Any ideas or comments will be greatly appreciated Thanks for your time and input in advance.

I think we married the same woman! My wife was the same way. She is from Iceland and no, they do not have any snakes there. One day we went into a pet store and found a hatchling BP. My wife finally touched it and said "Hey, that's not slimy". She agreed to let me keep it but insisted that it stayed in the garage. Ok. No problem. After a day in the garage, she said to me, "I think it's too hot in the garage for him" (we live in Florida). Then she suggested he be moved into the house. Well, long story short, he's an adult now and HER favorite snake.

Most people who dislike snakes do so out of lack of knowledge or misconceived notions. Take your time and educate your wife. I bet she'll come around. But, don't push it on her. She may just end up tolerant.

Good Luck!
