HCU members have aceess (sometimes for a small daily fee) to thousands of acres in the Big Bend region.

Unless you're absolutely hell-bent on taking a lot of animals home, the roads are still wide open for observing and photographing herps. I plan to spend many nights doing just that-probably about the same as before the road collecting ban!

Cool i dont have to collect anyway. Just lots of pics! Are there any cuts in big bend national park? Anybody look for alterna there(to photograph olnly!)

Unfortunately (and unbelievably!) Big Bend National Park is now off limits for nocturnal wildlife observation. That's right-this primarily DESERT park, in which most viewable wildlife is completely nocturnal, now bans the use of artificial lights-even headlights-for wildlife observation or photography.

I would:
1. Call the park headquarters to discuss and complain-this is a ridiculous and unacceptable situation and we should all be working to get it changed..
2. Head for nearby River Rd. (FM 170) which has awesome cuts and scenery, and a diverse herp fauna. Also allow me to suggest the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area, just east of the Park.

Thats freaking redicluous! Can you herp the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area with tools? Beacuse id be very interested in going there. Is it any good?

brhaco Jan 12, 2008 04:14 PM

You can herp the road through black gap and its right-of-way, but you must have special permission from the area Director to herp off the road, in the area itself. From what I gather, this permission is almost never granted.

I would definitely check out the HCU website if I were you-some of the ranches we have access to have some awesome herping potential!
