Oxytocin / Inducing

yagotter May 22, 2003 06:51 PM

Hi,

Folks with experience administering oxytocin:
Is it best to put the turtle in water or on sand after injection? Is a calcium injection necessary, or could an oral supplement do the same trick?

Does 5 IU / kg sound right for the first injection?

Thanks,
Mike

I have seen it several times first hand with my friend...You dont want to put the turtles in water..Put it on something dry...Soil or sand will work well. She will lay after a minimum of half an hour but make sure you're around when she does or she will likely trample the eggs. She does not dig a hole with the use or oxytocin, she just simply lays them. Im not exactly sure on the dosage, but you shouldn't have to do it more than once.

Where do you inject the turtle? I had egg binding with a box turtle before and I'm interested in knowing in case it happens this year. Did you get the medicine from a vet?
