How Many Crickets................

ginebig Jan 12, 2008 10:09 PM

is a decent meal for an adult? I have this four year old rescue I aquired a couple months ago who will scarf down twenty three quarter inch crickets in one sitting. Takes him all of ten minutes, and he'll do this every day if I let him. Is this OK or should I cut back?

insects should typically be only about 10-20% of the total daily intake of food for adult bearded dragons.. Basically a half dozen adult crickets a day is probably well in that percentage, it really depends on how much greens he eats.

WEll, I've got a 4" PVC end cap, maybe 2 inches deep. I fill it every day and he eats about 90% of that. I HAVE taken to giving him crickets only every other day .

Here's the other end of the spectrum. I take in rescues. I give them as much live food as they will take, until they cut down on their own. They are much smarter than their human keepers. Offer a salad full time every day. I always let the salad sit in a bottom full of water and mist the top, it stays moist that way. They will decide, as they do in the wild, whether need need protein or ruffage.

That's basically what I'm doing. I am just amazed at the amount he eats every day. He was a good size and weight when I got him so I assumed he'd been well taken care of, but he eats like it's his last meal .

hmm, my bd Toki is about 9 or 10 inches long, i feed him about ten crickets a day, i'm starting to think it's not enough, also he wont eat anything that doesnt move.

BDlvr Jan 14, 2008 03:56 AM

10 a day isn't enough for that size. Is that all he will eat? 5 each meal? At that size mine ate 75 to 100 a day.

usually if i put in more than 10 there will be a few crawling around until i go to work, but then i get home from work and hes alseep for the night. the crickets are usually gone though. he's about 3 months old.

You really need to feed a dragon that size 2 live meals a day. Also are you sure you're feeding the right size crickets?

i might add, 10 inches snout to tail tip, not snout to vent. he seems to be happy, healthy, he sheds and is growing.

my beardie is 8 years old and he still doesnt eat anything that doesnt move, and to get him eat veggies it has to be first thing in the morning and I have to get him hungry by skippy a day without feeding, now i dont recommend you do that with baby, and juvenile beardies since they are growing.
