Hasn't eaten since September 07?

lgehrig4 Jan 12, 2008 10:21 PM

I bought a 1500g female last September on these classifieds. The animal looks great and has obviously eaten well her entire life. The previous owner said that she eats f/t med rats and to waive them slowly in front of her to get her to strike. I've been trying almost every week with 2 different sized rats and even mice. I also tried a live rat and mouse but she shows absolutely no interest.

I'm not a beginner, but I have never had an animal that would not eat. What should I do at this point? The temps are fine and she has two hides. I also have a Pastel Ball and 75% Diamond Jungle that are going very well.

I understand that balls can get thrown off from being moved around, but this is over 4 months now.

Thanks in advance
Jeff

She is likely off feed for breeding season - it's that time of the year - I wouldn't worry too much she should start feeding again in a couple of months. In the mean time you can try feeding her a live small rat and see if she takes it - otherwise every couple of weeks try according to what and how the previous owner told you she was being fed.

Good luck.

Try putting alot of crumpled up newspaper in her enclosure with her. This works for some of my stubborn eaters, kinda gives them a sence of security and makes the hunt a little more natural for them.

I agree with both. She may just be off feed for the season. The crumpled paper is a good idea that has worked for us. You might try putting a crawler rat(one thats still nursing) in a paper bag with her overnight. That has worked to get shy feeders going. Once they have taken a few meals that way, try the crumpled up paper. Then you can try taking out the paper ( a little at a time)as she begins feeding on a regular basis.
Hope that helps.

Dave
