I used under tank heaters before i made the encased heaters...i found under the tank heaters to scar the wood of the bookcase and I just didn't trust it....it scarred the wood and i felt it might be too hot for the balls....even though I used a plate of plexi between the snakes and the heater....plus substrate....I wasn't 100% sure...so i felt it best to change it...
remember there is no "breathing room" between each enclosure...and being such a small space to work with, it makes it hard to regulate the hot and cool sides of the enclosure.....your best bet, IMO, is to house your heater seperately and mount it in the cage...otherwise you'll find your housing to be one hot piece of wood and not a very good place to house your snakes...
i tried both, and this worked best for me....and didn't cost much to make
and PLEASE don't forget to close your gaps with the weather stripping....(as the previous poster said)they DO and WILL get out if you don't take extra special care
