Gravid 5100 Gram Normal

fgs Jan 13, 2008 12:11 PM

I was checking on the ladies this morning and saw my big female laying on her side. She was bred to my pied.

It looks like she's ready to explode.

Jees Brian...and I thought my 3100 was big. I would be curious about # of eggs too.

I think you may have been one of the people who asked me for updates on the different Mojaves I produced in 07. Here's a new pic.

I think I've seen a picture of you holding her streched out in an outside shot?

She is nice - hope you get lots of eggs.

You need to email a pic of you holding that snake to show her size to Dewayne Richard. He and I were talking about big snakes the other day and I was trying to tell him just how big that girl is.

First photo is of Big Mama taken in 06 when she weighed 4500 grams. If you look carefully you can tell that she is going through her pre ovulation swell. She laid 15 eggs, but only 8 were viable.

The second photo was taken a month or so ago as she and the pied were locked up. My hope is to produce a little army of female het pieds from her this year.

In my experience ball pythons generally lay about 1/3 of their weight in eggs but I don't have experience with girls quite that big so maybe that doesn't hold true when they are that big and chubby. I have noticed (with a little disappointment) that big girls sometimes lay much bigger eggs so the number of eggs isn't always directly proportionate to their size. With smaller girls I'll often figure 110 gram eggs so take their weight in grams divided by 330 to get a rough guess of the number of eggs. Of course this is a bit of a dieing art since so many palpitate and get good counts that way now days but with a girl that big and this late that might be hard.

So, if she laid huge 150 gram eggs I could still see her possibly laying (5100/3)/150 = 11. If she lays smaller eggs even more, maybe up to 17 with 100 gram eggs. One of my girls out on breeding loan was about 3,700 grams when she laid 13 unusually small eggs for a girl her size (like 100 gram eggs). So the big problem with this method is that you don't know how big the eggs will be so while you have a pretty good guess for the clutch weight (1/3 of mom’s, around 1,700 grams) you don't have as good a guess of the number of eggs (probably somewhere between 11 and 17).

Interesting observation Randy...going to save this and compare this year.

I think you are right Randy. I have quite a few big girls and 4,000 gram females on average don't have twice as many eggs as 2,000 gram females. No matter how big they get, clutches bigger that 12 or 14 are the exception, but the eggs do tend to be larger. I have had hatchlings that are 100 grams when they crawl out of the egg. I have a 5,400 gram female that I just checked with ultrasound which showed she currently has 14 ripe follicles that are between 2.5 - 3.0 cm (so all should go). It will be interesting to see how big these eggs get.

In ball pythons I hope to produce pieds, pastoves, spider mojave cross, blushing mojaves, mojaves het for caramel, pastels het for clown, or mojaves het for clown, het pieds, and het clowns. In boas I hope to produce sunglows from my female lavender sunglow, EBV motleys het for albino, snows, albinos het for snow, hypo motleys 66 % het for albino, albino motleys and if I'm really lucky sunglow motleys.
