Mealworm Addiction?

AndrewFromSoCal Jan 13, 2008 06:02 PM

I was out of crickets for a few days, so I started feeding my leopards mealworms. I always have some food, just in case one item gets eaten over. Anywho, i've gotten crickets again, but one of my females doesn't go for crickets at all. The other two leopards made the transition fine. I was thinking about seperating the one female who hasn't started eating crickets again, but figured i'd give her a few days just to see.

I dropped a superworm in front of her last night, and she took it no problem. Yet, she still won't even look at the crickets. Has anyone experienced this? Think she'll switch back?

Opinions?

Well, I despise crickets. That being said, I have a few geckos that went on mealworm strike a few months back. They refused to eat if it was a mealworm. So i started giving them crix. So far all but 1 has come back around to mealies lol. So they just get picky somtimes. Feed her meal worms if thats what she prefers lol.
I guess If I ate pizza for 2 years, then I was given a hot dog. I would try to eat hot dogs as long as I could lol.

Don't you just hate them picky rep's? Lol There is 2 things I could suggest maybe trying.

1) This could just be down to lazyness and not wanting to work for her food. Have you tried taking the back legs off the crix so that can't get away as fast?

2) Here is what I do, some people are gonna cures me for this and I'm gonna let them because my Leo likes it (although only had it a few days).

Instead of spliting them up as you might do and try keeping a little mealworm feeding bowl of mealworms in their enclosure with them. (make sure it is one of them mealworm feeding dishes though where they can't get out) And still offer crix. This will help in 2 ways (ONE) That way they can have their set meal every other day (or how ever many days you leave before feeding them) and still have a snack there if they get hungry. (TWO) If she doesn;t take the crix there is still mealworms there for her to feed on if she doesn;t go fo the crix.

If you do it the 2nd way and she is still refusing the crix though I would suggest weighing her every few days to make sure she doesn;t start to lose weight.

Hope this has helped and possibly given you some ideas

Ron

My girl did that awhile back with Wax Worms. Ran out of crickets for about 2 days and just let her have as many waxies as she wanted in the meantime. When I got crickets she just sat there and stared at them, then looked to me waiting for the worms. I left the crickets in there and refused the wax worms until she started eating again less than a week later. She's eating crickets and I don't give her waxies often, maybe once a month and only 2 at a time. I think she was just lazy and having a tantrum but at least we're back on track now.

I have three females, who decided they were too lazy to hunt for the crickets so I started giving them mealies. When I decided it was time for crickets again, no one would take them. I decided to feed each one a a meal worm or two, then I grabbed a cricket in my tongs and tricked them into eating them. The all seemed to take the crickets when hand-offered and then I just stared putting a few in at a time and now they will chase them if they feel like it. But getting them in a "feed mode" helped. Good luck!!

same thing happened to me. i had my geckos on crickets for a long time. Then the crickets started to annoy me so i switched to meal worms. My geckos wouldn't eat them. I decided to leave the mealies in there and when they were hungry enough they would eat them. And it worked for me. Now they will eat about anything I give them. I staple meal worms and have been feeding hornworms occasionally as a snack. My geckos love them!!

Assuming these are adult geckos, I would just go cold turkey. They can go weeks and weeks without food if they are in proper condition. She will eat crickets when she gets hungry enough.
