How long would you plan a trip to look for alterna and some crotes?

I would say hunt Langtry. Walk the cuts anywhere between 5 miles west and 5 miles east of Langtry for 10 nights and you have a better than 50% chance of seeing one. Alot depends on the weather conditions. How experienced are you at roadcruising? If you haven't developed a "search image" for snakes on the road it is best to ride with somebody experienced. "Search image" is basicly the almost automatic ability to distingish snakes in the road. It isn't hard to develop but until you do you stand a very good chance of running over snakes. I took one of my younger brothers out roadcruising a couple times and despite the fact that he likes snakes and even has one as a pet, he did not have the ability to see them on the road. In about 30 minutes he missed two snakes plus ran over a large rattlesnake and a gophersnake before I had to take back the wheel. Walking the roadcuts is a very productive way of seeing snakes but you might want to wear some boots and leggings to protect you from rattlesnakes.

The first time you head out it helps a lot to be with other herpers, there is only so much you can learn reading about it here. The time in the field with an experianced herper will open up a whole new list of questions while at the same time answering all you thought you needed to know

Then your mom can sleep and you can walk right behind the Cabins. Lots of lepidus and alterna right there, and best of all you don't have to break any laws to do that.

How much time do have and how long can you afford to be out?

To be honest there is no promise you can be out a week and see everything on your wish list at least twice or you could leave with an empty camara flash.

The best bet is to put the time you can into it... not cut it short.
