How much do y'all pay to feed ur retics

tumbslt Jan 13, 2008 11:02 PM

Hello everyone, just doing some research on these guys, I was just wondering how much you spend on average monthly to feed your retics, and from where? I have wanted a male retic for a very long time now and was just wondering what I might be getting into. I already have a large female albino boa about (7 foot) as well as a couple chondros, so I have some experience. But any suggestions and or advice would be greatly appreciated, as well as any suggestions on good links for care info. and etc. as well as good books. Like I said I am trying to find out as much as possible, if you know any good breeders I would like to hear your suggestions.

thanks again,

Brighton

right now, rabbits are running me about 10$ each. I cannot get stubborn snakes to take pigs... and i'm tired of having pigs here when they dont get eaten.
sooo--- we usually go with 7-9 LARGE (10 lbs or so) rabbits- per snake- we dont do that every month, usually every other month. (some snakes are this month, some are next month kind of deal...)

during the summer months, the rabbits are 1-3$ each and we go with the same #, sometimes more, so we can slack off a little in the winter when they are expensive....

as far as smaller prey- like rats- all mine are 1-2$ each... so not much....

hope that helps...

How big are these snakes?
"we usually go with 7-9 LARGE (10 lbs or so) rabbits- per snake"
I noticed you don't do it often, but 9 rabbits coming to around 90lbs. per feeding sounds like a LOT! An average male gazelle is 70lbs. or so, so every other month they're basically eating a gazelle? Glad I'm not having to clean up that cage!!! So, anyway, I'm just wondering how large these snakes are that get 90lbs. per meal. That's also 90 bucks per feeding so about $11.25 per week since it'a bi-monthly, per animal. Is this feeding regimen better than say, feeding 1 rabbit per week, or 8 rabbits total every 2 months? Just curious, as I would probably opt for the weekly feedings, vs. bi-monthly rabbit fests-lol! Take care!

lmao- they're huge!

The smallest one on that rabbit number is 14 foot- measured by ME with a string- not a random guess with a tape measure.

the biggest girl is around 17 foot- she moves too much to measure and its been since last summer- so i know shes grown.

I do the bi-monthly feedings because in the spring/summer months, we do A LOT of educational shows. during the summer they get less food- so it goes through them faster- its a little hard to explain...

i can't take a 17 ft. python around 400 people- when she's about to poo 9 rabbits... yha know?

during the summer we usually go with 4 rabbits bi-monthly and its tacktfully scheduled between events...

anyway- they are huge....
i'll try to get some pics... i'm hoping to buy a new camera in a few weeks- i'll have to wait until its warmer outside to get some really good pics...

I've never been one to consider a 14ft retic huge and even a 17 footer is what I would consider an average sized adult female. With that said, unless the bigger one is built like a burm, 9 of the 10lb rabbits per feeding is way tooooooooo much and to do this consistently is just crazy. What's even more crazy is that you are feeding a 14ft retic like this. Heck I've seen healthy retics that size that would barely out-weigh the food you guys are feeding it. I am hoping you are grossly wrong with your guess of the feed items size and the quanity of them being fed.

Depends on if you're getting a baby or an adult, plus if you're going to be feeding it once or twice a week. If a baby than fuzzy to winned rats is somewhere between $1.00-1.75 ea. and rabbits for me cost a buck a pound. For rodent breeders you could look on the business page and there's a list of places to buy frozen rodents/feeders. Since it's a retic it shouldn't care if frozen thawed or freshly killed. They like food, and lots of it.
As far as breeders there's bob clark, constrictors, prehistoric pets, and baldogo; these are some of the big breeders that could help you more.

Thank you all for your responses,

though some of them I must say made me more confused than before I asked the question.
