What can u use to make a nice big Hide?

bsleeper May 22, 2003 06:55 PM

Hey... One of my Balls (Pythons) has been increasingly agressive since its last shed (first shed since i had it). Im thinking it is because i only have one rock hide and a really big paper towel roll that was actually a roll from the plastic stuff you use when wrapping boxes together... but its big enough for the snake to fit most of it's body in there(i will post a pic of it in there as soon as i can get it). Any way im thinking I need another hide... Maybe even a humid Hide but the ball is big 4 feet long and about 2 months ago it weighd 1.980 grams but hasnt eaten since the weigh so may have lost weight. So this hide needs to be pretty big but not too wide seeing how it has to fit in a 50 gallon tank... Any help will be greatly appreciated... Thank You
Bobby Sleeper

Milkbone boxes also have a nice thin profile.

Reminds me...when I first got my female she was 4 ft and 2.5# and her favorite place was curled up in a tissue box...she fit, don't know how. She now has a simple box, upside down with a door cut in it. It is NOT elegant and I am looking for a good domed container to use. I tried a flower pot.....it was perfect, until she flexed and literally popped it into three peices. I tried a bigger one and she didn't like it. Now she is pouting because I just moved everyone into a 'reptile room' She is OCD....hates change.

Clay or terra-cotta flower pots work well. Especially the shorter pots. Even a large saucer would work well. You can cut a semi-circular hole in the side using a masonry blade in a jig saw.

Remeber that they like to hide in places that they can touch all sides...its a security thing. The cereal box or even a sturdy shirt box (from the department stores) can be good. I myself have been using the terra cotta pots and cutting them with a dremel tool (the masonry blade sounds better). They are relatively cheap at $3 - $8 compared to the $50 bucks for a store bought rock hide that the snake could care less about, and you can pick lots of designs and such. Heck, I even have something like your water dish, just smaller and darker colored, with a 3" hole cut in it and placed on the cool side...my big adults love it.

I once used the lid off of a super8 film projecter as a hide. It was metal, so it held humidity quite well. I also had another hide rock in the cage. It was always fun to see the snake change locations...almost like he had a change in preference.

Cuts through the clay pots like butter........MUCH faster and easeir to cut with!

My family hates it when I clean tanks. For about a week before the "Total empty" cleanings I start going through our pantry looking for boxes.

I wind up with a pantry full of bags that used to be in boxes that I have labeled with a felt tip marker.....my kids keep telling me...."Fruit loops NOT snakes belong in the Froot Loop box!"
