Dexter 71 grams - good way to track?

EddieF Jan 15, 2008 04:27 PM

So I weighed Dexter today, 71 grams. I had this erasable whiteboard I stuck to the fridge with the snakes' and lizards' weights, when they last shed, etc. But it's not a very good system.

Without getting into a LOT of detail like I'm sure a lot of you guys with large collections need to, does anyone have any ideas on a simple way to track some basic herp care and maintenance items?

Maybe a simple Excel spreadsheet someone has come up with that I could pirate, to just type in weights, sheds, feedings, etc.?

I've tried a couple times to do this manually by myself and I'm just spinning my wheels. Any assistance greatly appreciated!

Thanks.
Ed.

Boy is this EXACTLY what I was hoping someone would send me!

However, I appear to be having an Excel problem! I loaded it along with Word and Entourage when I moved to this Apple laptop several months ago, I guess I never used it. But now it's telling me my trial version expired and I need to buy it. But I own it!

I'll have to sort that out, but thank you so much for this file. Perfect.

I can barely see my snakes much less take weights and measures. With more snakes you just don't have time to look at them. Just open the drawer and throw chow in. Open and change water. I don't even move the shavings to know they are in there. Maybe that's why Some of mine don't eat. HA HA HA!

The only snakes I play with are my Phantom, Pewter and of course i play with my Peabino a lot.

Exactly what I use:

1 sheet printer paper, folded in half

Top portion:
Species: (write species) ID Number: (If applicable) Gender:
Common Name: (Like Cal King) DOB: Description: (high white, albino, etc)
Nickname: (Like Bvrk!) Purchased: (name of store/person, along with phone number) Notes: (problem feeder, biter, etc)

And then I draw a line under that, and just list date and what happened on that day. Be it feeding, shedding, poop, vet visit, introducing breeders...

I just tape it to the front of the cage, or for my display cage, it sits on top of the screen.
Easiest method of keeping tabs on my animals that I've found!

How do you check weights? Or anything that happened months ago?
I have a laptop sits right in the room with me and makes it easier then writing on a piece of paper, granted not everyone is computer literate but still it can be worth the time to learn with the time saved..

I keep track of weights by writing them on the paper as well. I write "(date) weight: this many grams".

I have a program on my computer called "breeder's assistant". I use the generic one, and it keeps track of what I need to know.
My cards last me at least 6 months, for some animals that shed and eat less frequently, they can last a year.

I'm just offering up what works for me and my collection. Since I check/clean tubs before work, I don't have time to boot up my computer and program and enter everything in. Anytime I notice something, I can just jot it down on the paper. It's not that I'm not computer savvy, it's just way more convenient and easier to keep up with.
