Feeding question?

dangermouse21 Jan 15, 2008 04:32 PM

I have tried twice now to feed my cornsnake. I have been told that you can in a way force feed them. I dont want it to die from not eating, so what is the best method to force feed? I have been using frozen pinkies since live ones are hard to come by.

I would wait longer before attempting to force feed your snake. Sometimes snakes will go for a month without eating and are completely fine. When my grey-banded kingsnake was just a little guy he didn't eat till about 5 weeks. My anery has on occasion refused a meal or two as well.

What have you tried so far to get your snake to eat?

Here are some feeding methods:
*Put your snake in a container (with air holes) with the pinky and put it in the snake's cage with the heat lamp off.
*Wash the pinky with Ivory soap (bar)
*Dip the pinky's head in the water from a tuna can.
*Braining.
*The container method at night.
*Washing the pinky with Ivory soap and then placing house gecko skin on the head or a drop of Lizard Maker by T-Rex on the head.
*Sometimes snakes like to hunt at night so, you can try placing the pinky near the water dish or on the opposite side of the cage.
*You can also jiggle the pinky near the snake with feeding tongs.

Yes, I think it helped me the most with my grey-banded kingsnake.

>>Is it available on-line?

Unfortunately many U.S. websites do not carry it. It is still available on many U.K. reptile supply online stores. E-Bay occasionally will have it though. The best bet would be a reptile show or the kingsnake.com classifieds.

Two weeks without eating is really nothing to worry about if the snake is not loosing weight or condition.

Agreed. I have a female Ball Python that only takes prey once a month and look at my new born Corn, Hatched on 11-4-07 and has only taken 2 pinkie heads and one pinkie so far and his health is ok.
