Help needed with new rat rack.....

royalkreationz Jan 15, 2008 06:59 PM

I have designed this rack that will be 5 tubs high. Everything is going great except using the hardware cloth. I am having trouble stretching it tightly. If you have any tips, I would appreciate you sharing with me. One thing I am wondering is if I may have to eliminate the part that is wrapped around the ends.

Thanks

Jody,
Are you just making lids for the tubs and then sliding them on to the pvc shelf or are you trying to attatch the hardware cloth to the pvc pipe?

I am attaching the hardware cloth to the pvc using zippy ties.

You could also try drilling with a flathead screw. Might give you a tighter fit.

I would like to see more pictures. I think this is a great idea.

It is a great idea, and I think I am getting what you are talking about. I think I would use a thin screw/nut combo with the head of the screw being on the bottom or where the tub will slide in. If I am looking at this right, the rack is set up more like a snake rack in that the tubs will only be separated by the rails of the tub below it instead of the rail slider type of rack. I think you will also have to keep some of the lip of the wire wrapped around where you will slide the tub in on it may get hung up..
Also, on my tubs, the wire cloth isn't "bounce a quarter on it" tight but the rail that keeps the tub against the cloth is so no one can get out....yet..

What do you think the cost difference is compared to a normal wood set up?

I think it is comparable. I know I saw something similar year ago somehwere on this grand web. I built a few racks in my time and always look for better ideas. I like it enough. I may build a similar rack. I need to build a rack for growups. I still have cement tubs, but see some flexing by them being hung by their jips. I definatly think the screws would be better. But this rack could be kept out in humid enviorments with little chance of warpage. A great idea. That just needs a little tweaking. TODD
